EESAC Meeting Minutes
Call or order
Time: 4:30 p.m.
Ms. Amparo Quintero, EESAC Chairperson, opened the meeting by telling us about some of the handouts that are available to peruse during the meeting: CASAS report and prior EESAC meeting minutes.
Ms. Cassy Reichert from Mass Mutual joined the meeting and provided snacks. EESAC members welcomed Ms. Reichert.
Review/Approve Prior Meeting Minutes
EESAC reviewed and approved prior meeting minutes unanimously.
School Improvement Plan (SIP)
The School Improvement Plan (SIP) strategies are being implemented. This is evident as we walk through various classrooms. The SIP was recently approved by the District. In November, the School Board will approve all SIPs.
RtI/Leadership Team Reviews/Updates
If there is a concern about a student, please initate the RtI (Response to Intervention) process by completing the packet. They are located in the Main Office with the other documents and forms. Ms. Maria Y. Rodriguez, Assistant Principal, would like all packets turned in by December of this year.
Open Forum/Discussions
School Operations
Budget
We were able to gain an additional SPED teacher, Mr. Paul Azor (Inclusion). Mr. Azor will focus his efforts in Mathematics and Dr. Joann Rivera will be working with Reading. Ms. Ada Ortiz will be providing services for our English Language Learner (ELL) population. We also gained an additional teacher for Gifted, Ms. Jessica Hernandez.
CASAS report was distributed to the committee. There is $2702.02 available funds. The bylaws stipulate that $3,000 minus $0.01 can be transferred for school wide purposes. We can transfer our EESAC account balance. Some suggestions for utilizing these monies are to purchase additional printers for Primary teachers (to be used when their current printer’s ink runs out completely and the surplus ink) and purchase incentives for Accelerated Reader (AR) and Reflex Math programs. We might be able to use the funds for both endeavors.
Comment (Quintero): Can we purchase the more labels for the teachers to use when reviewing student interactive notebooks?
Answer (Dr. Riaz): We can also look into this.
Question (Welch): Is there a schedule for the library?
Answer (Dr. Riaz): The schedule was sent out today. I would like to note that some of the Literature Anthology passages are part of AR.
The committee voted unanimously in favor of the above referenced suggestions for the use of the EESAC funds.
Title I
Ms. Wanda Rosario, Community Involvement Specialist, has had great feedback and office traffic as of the result of distributing and informative flyer about our school.
Comment (Moore): Now that we have the same governor, how will Title I be affected?
Answer (Dr. Riaz): There are no changes. Money is appropriated for each school year.
Comment (Welch): I am on the Early Childhood Committee, is it possible for parents to access a PC in the classroom?
Answer (Rosario): The Parent Academy will release a list of workshops that will address this objective.
PTA Survey results will be used to determine which workshops will be offered. There have been many Connect-Eds to keep parents informed of what is happening in our school. Additionally, parents are able to follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
Comment (Welch): We have lost some African American families because some parents have commented that everything is geared towards the Hispanic population at our school.
Comment (Quintero): Meetings are bilingual.
Comment (Rosario): Workshops are predominately geared to the population in attendance. We serve and treat everyone equally.

New Business
The PTA Board meeting took place. We have new board members. The PTA is also conducting a membership drive. We are trying to increase enrollment. There were many in attendance. Minutes will be added to the website along with announcement about upcoming events. All documents are posted on various sites such as our school’s website, Twitter, and Facebook. Parents who say that they do not have certain documents, can now access them on these sites.
Comments/Concerns
Question (Welch): Will more Kindergarten students be placed in the Gifted Program?
Answer (Dr. Riaz): These students can be referred and placed, but it is difficult to service so many grade levels. These students will be serviced on a consultation basis. In second grade, they will be serviced fully by the gifted teacher. Common Core curriculum makes it difficult to combine grade levels.
Comment (Moore):What are the consultation guidelines?
Answer (Dr. Riaz): The students will be provided with supplemental materials until they enter the Gifted Program in second grade.
Comment (Dr. Riaz): SAT scores are being looked at to determine if the students qualifies for Gifted. For example, 90% or higher on the SAT under Plan B. There are not too many students in this category.
Comment (Welch): I feel that students are pulled out after Kindergarten because of the Gifted Program.
Comment (Moore): There are SAT K-2 booklets. I noticed that Broward has SAT prep and each student booklet for practice. I will bring the issue up at the next EESAC meeting. This is something that might be beneficial to our students.
Answer (Dr. Riaz): We do receive a booklet but it has only 3 questions and it issued to each student.
Comment (Rosario): Hot Spot WiFi are being received by the students.
Comment (Moore): I would like to congratulate Dr. Omar Riaz, Principal, for the fabulous professional development that he offered. It was fun and engaging. I enjoyed creating my teacher website as did all the teachers in attendance.
Comment (Rodriguez): There will be an honor roll ceremony on November 24, 2014. It will take place during the day and invitations with R.S.V.P cards will be sent out.
Comment (Rosario): We need to restock the pantry for Thanksgiving. Donations are being accepted.
Comment (Welch): Are we collecting box tops?
Answer (Rosario): Yes. Absolutely.
