EESAC Meeting Minutes
12-17-15 4:30 p.m.
Last month’s meeting minutes: Motion to approve last month’s meeting minutes (Quintero). Approved (Dr. Riaz).
Handouts: meeting minutes, agenda.
SIP Review/Updates
The Action Plan has been completed. We received feedback and will be focusing on the following:
Reading: Focus on the Writing process, 10 day Writing framework, journals, and differentiated instruction (DI).
Math: We are focusing on the standards that the students are having trouble mastering. We are focusing on the progression standards that are below or one level above during DI.
Science: Planning cards are being used to help teachers prepare lessons based on the standards.
Early Warning System (EWS): This plan is being tweaked so that we can continue to monitor and motivate students to attend school regularly. The slogan is “5 or Less”.
Question (Jerry): Will this apply to tardiness, too?
Answer (Dr. Riaz): Tardiness is not part of the Action Plan. However, we would like to conduct a parent led workshop where parents who are successful in getting their child(ren) to school offer advice and tips on the subject.
SST is meeting on a biweekly basis to address the issue of students who miss interventions.
Ms. Schevis and Mr. Berezdivin are also providing more personalized support in order to motivate students.
The goals and strategies for the School Improvement Plan are being implemented by teachers.
RtI (Response to Intervention):
Ms. Maria Y. Rodriguez, Assistant Principal is working on open cases. Some are not “good” cases because the student’s grade point average. There will be meetings in January to triage cases and prioritize.
School Operations –
Curriculum Issues
No curriculum issues.
Budget Updates:
There is an open Gifted Itinerant position.
There is an open 3rd grade position (effective after December 18, 2015). We have reached out to Miami Dade College and Florida International University, but have not found a candidate. We have interviewed many candidates, but have not found one to fill these positions.
Comment (Jerry): I had spoken to my contact at Florida Memorial, who indicated that there may be teachers available after January.
We have budgeted for an extra hourly custodian and have not been able to fill that position. The working hours for this position are from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The rooms are being prioritized for cleaning/waxing. We can use the monies for the hourly custodial position for landscaping services instead. We have one bid that was incredibly high. We are following up to see if the bid was correct. We need three (3) bids and the vendor must be on the approved vendor list for Miami Dade County Public Schools.
Question (C. Moore): What is the amount or budget?
Answer (Dr. Riaz): The vendor has to be on the list.
Comment (Rosario): In the past we have had parents who are in that type of business perform the work and it was paid by PTA.
Answer (Dr. Riaz): We must look at a case by case basis and need to have two (2) more bids before proceeding.
Title I – We received news via telephone that Broadmoor is in compliance.
Parent Academy no longer offers free tutoring. However, they provide many other resources and parents are encouraged to visit and sign up. They do offer homework help.
New Business –
On January 19th, there will be a strategic planning session at the ETO office. The Action Plan will be reviewed and we will discuss how we will continue to implement the goals and strategies delineated therein. The week after this session, our school is scheduled to attend Datacom with the Superintendent of Schools.
Robotics Club: The club is underway. Ms. Affolter and Dr. Fernandez are the teachers who are running the program. The robot parts were just received. We are noticing that attendance in 4th and 5th grade has improved and this may be to the excitement about the club. Students look forward to coming to school.
In January, we would like to have students join the Mad Scientist Club. This will be for 5th graders only because it is an accountability grade for Science.
Question (C. Moore): When can we implement an Arts or Chess Club afterschool?
Answer (Dr. Riaz): We need to obtain the information from the District. Scheduling is the only issue.
