EESAC Meeting Minutes
03-03-16-15 4:30 p.m.

Last month’s meeting minutes: Motion to approve last month’s meeting minutes (Quintero). The motion was seconded by: (Ms. S. Johnson).
Handouts: meeting minutes, agenda.

Ms. Prieto wanted to recognize Ms. Crystel Moore for acting as recording secretary in her absence.

SIP Review/Updates
Mid-Year Reflection: The plan was submitted to the District who will then sent to the State of Florida. The goals and strategies have not changed.

EESAC will vote on the issue of the SIP waiver that was voted on by the faculty at Broadmoor on 02/24/16. The staff voted unanimously. They did not request a contract waiver, but did request an alternative supplemental model in order to pay for a grade level chairperson for each department/grade level.
Motion to vote in favor of the supplemental model waiver (Dr. Riaz) – EESAC voted unanimously in favor of the waiver.
Motion to vote in favor of not requesting contract waiver (Dr. Riaz) – EESAC voted unanimously in favor of the waiver.

RtI (Response to Intervention):
Next week retention letters will be distributed to 3rd grade students. These students were not necessarily referred to RtI, but we are fulfilling a requirement for the retention process in this grade.
Question (Jerry): Are these retention letters only for 3rd grade?
Answer (Dr. Riaz): Yes. When students are retained beyond the 3rd grade, there is an increase in the drop probability of the student dropping out of school. The retention process therefore is closely monitored in the 3rd grade.

School Operations –
We have hired a new custodian. Ms. Gonzalez Sanchez will work between the hours of 4:00 – 9:00 p.m.
The custodians are focusing on scrubbing floors the classroom floors.
We are still seeking to fill a 3rd grade teaching position.
Ms. Joyce Patmore, Pre-K Teacher will be retiring at the end of March. We will fill her position with a teacher classified as a “3100”. The selected candidate’s position may convert to a full time position pending next year’s student enrollment.
Question (Welch): Why are we looking for a teacher in 3rd grade?
Answer (Dr. Riaz): We have not been able to find a highly qualified teacher to fill this position. Many of the candidates are unable to answer basic interview questions.
Question (Welch): Why not hire a Teacher for America Teacher (TFA)?
Answer (Dr. Riaz): We are not able to hire these teachers in the middle of the school year. We had an interview via Skype with a potential candidate, but she will be looking to relocate for the next school year.

Curriculum Issues – none.

Budget Updates:
We are currently under budget. We are utilizing funds to improve technology throughout the school. There are issues in the primary grades with intermittent internet connectivity. These issues are not computer related, but rather they are due to Ethernet jacks that have experienced dry rotting. The dry rotting issues are caused by lack of air conditioning in the classrooms during the summer recess. We will be purchasing wireless adapters to address these issues. We will also be procuring two (2) laptop carts that will be utilized by the fourth grade students.

Title I –
A parent workshop was conducted on 02-17-16. Twenty-nine (29) parents were in attendance. The supervisor of The Parent Academy was in attendance and was pleased by the participation and the content of the meeting. The next meeting is TBA.

New Business –
Black History Museum Tour is set to take place on 03-10-16.
There will be a 5th Grade Movie Night this Friday. The proceeds will help fund the 5th grade trip to Disney World in Orlando.
5K Run/Walk: Please sign up by 03-28-16. We will need a count of participants that will represent our school so that we can order t-shirts. The event begins at 7:00 a.m. at Museum Park. Dr. Riaz will provide additional information. Mr. Joe Gebara, PTA President, will be running for our school. Eighty percent (80%) of the proceeds will be donated back to our school site. There are prizes for different categories. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate. Dr. Riaz confirmed that we can provide our own tent for this event. Ms. C. Moore has a tent that she can lend for the event as well. The registration for adults is $30 and is less for students. Parents are welcome to participate.
Comment (Quintero): Can we send flyers and reminders as the date of the event approaches?

Comments/Concerns –
The mascot for the Miami Heat cannot come to our school on April 7th. The dates that we are asking are already booked. We could not schedule him for May because of the play-offs. The next available time is mid-June and school would have already adjourned for the summer.
Our school was recently visited by the Educational Transformation Office (ETO). The outcome was favorable.
FSA Testing dates and schedules were discussed.
The possibility of a Pep Rally to offer the students a break in between testing was also discussed.

Adjourned 5:00 p.m.
