Review of Minutes (January 10, 2009)
Approval of Minutes

FCAT UPDATE
• Tutorials – before school for ESOL students (Perez) and after school for Science (Velencoso)
• Pull-Out Program - 25th Percentile identified and taken from PE class for extra practice using FCAT released exams (Perez, Ognibene, and Garcia)
GRADUATION
• 95% of 12th graders will be graduating (district currently at 60%)
• 10 of 38 graduating students possibly receiving Superintendent Diploma of Distinction
BUDGET
• Have not experienced any other cuts in budget; however, we do anticipate cuts for the following school year.
CURRICULUM
• School currently offering 121 courses in 24 classes and 2 labs
• Our AP Program will expand from 9 courses currently being offered to 12 courses.
• All students in AP Courses will be taking the end of the year exam in their respective subjects.
• Each teacher teaching an AP course must present a Course Syllabus to College Board for approval.
• School takes the cost of ordering an exam for each student enrolled in these AP courses.
• Business curriculum will expand from 3 courses to 8 courses.
• Mater East is the only charter school in the nation to have an Academy of Finance. We will have official acceptance in April from NAF.
• Have been invited to possibly present at the NAF Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
TECHNOLOGY
• Received all computers for Media Center
• LCD Projectors are being mounted
• Computers have been installed in the Reading classes (3 per class)
• Currently working on the school’s website – Mr. Beta
DISTRICT ACCREDITATION
• Meeting with State representative went well and accreditation is well on the way.
ONLINE COURSES
• Middle school students will be taking online courses the following school year; most likely an elective.
• Possibility for students that have failed a course and need to make-up the credits
• Supervision will be available during school hours or students may work on the course from home
ENROLLMENT
• Approximately 120 applications have been received for the upcoming school year. Focus is on improving the quality of student population.
• 90% will be coming from the our feeder pattern (Mater East Elementary)
SUPERVISION
• Work with Ms. Barriel for an increase in police supervision after school.
ATHLETICS
• Faculty vs Student Basketball game on March 25th at 4pm at Jose Marti Park
• Baseball
o Received a $1000 grant from the Florida Marlins for the baseball program
o Games on Sundays at Coral Gables Senior High
• Girls Flag Football
o March 13th from 11am to 1pm girls will be practicing with Miami Fury (Professional Women’s Flag Football Team)
ACTIVITIES
• Domino Night
o Originally scheduled for February has been changed to middle – end of April
o 18yrs and older and possibility of different types of tickets
o Only open to parents or family of students
Fun Fair
o Scheduled for April
o Carnival where all clubs, teams, organizations will have a booth
ST. THOMAS UNIVERSITY
• Students in 11th and 12th grade in Honors English or AP English have been selected to participate in a program with St. Thomas University.
• Attend a field trip in April, visit school, provided lunch, and discuss course/major options.
• These students can then have the possibility of taking courses in the summer
• Program initially started at the district level; however, it was not approved so then was offered to charter schools.
