EESAC Minutes – February 16, 2010

The 7th EESAC Meeting of the 2009-2010 school year commenced on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at 4:30 pm by EESAC Chair Ms. Linda Belkin. Mr. Ramos read the minutes from the last meeting. Mr. Uz made a motion to approve the minutes and Ms. Mercado second the motion and the minutes were approved. Ms. Lebena gave a quick update of some of the events and announcements from the minutes read, such as the Universal field trip and the Language Arts/Reading Night being a success, Math Department Night occurring on Wednesday evening (February 17th), FCAT Writes exam testing going smoothly and the rewards for those students who achieved mastery between the Fall and Winter Interim Assessments were issued, such as the dress down and VIP lunch passes. The first item on the agenda was the Uniform Dress Code Policy. Ms. Lebena informed all that a decision was needed by the EESAC Members whether to open up a vote for the school’s uniform policy to be changed or removed. After a brief discussion about the topic, Ms. Covone made a motion not to place a decision on the school’s uniform policy to an open vote. The motion was second by Mr. Uz. The second item on the agenda was the Midyear Review School Improvement Plan. Ms. Lebena mentioned that the review has been submitted to the district and gains were shown in target areas for the respective curricular departments. The last item on the agenda was FCAT Crunch time. Amongst some of the initiatives the school is doing to prepare our students for the FCAT test next month is the Reading and Mathematics coaches going into the intensive/remedial classes and assisting the teachers in instruction. Ms. Belkin also sought different solutions from the committee members on how to address the 8th grade Language Arts classes in relation to a mini-lesson on short and long response answering, due to the large class size of the 8th grade and the short time before the FCAT test. A decision was made by the committee for Ms. Belkin and the language arts teachers to film a mini-lesson on the strategies being taught and then for the language arts teachers to show it to the students and extend the instruction with particular examples that reflect the lesson. Ms. Belkin is going to share the committee recommendations with the department teachers and decide on a quick solution. Finally, a follow up was mentioned by Mr. Uz regarding the Health and Wellness committee and the continuation of the program. Ms. Covone then made a motion to adjourn the meeting and Ms Gonzalez second the motion. The next meeting will be in mid-March.
