Ms. Otero reviewed the schedule for FCAT testing. The writing test for 10th graders is Feb. 6th, with make ups on the 7th and 8th. The reading test for 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th (retakes) graders is Feb. 26th. The math test for 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th (retakes) graders is Feb. 27th. The NRT reading/math for 9th and 10th graders is March 6th. The science test for 11th graders is also on March 6th. Mr. Lowman stated that approximately 150 students in the adult program take the FCAT. Ms. Munnerlyn stated that there will be an FCAT writing refresher session for 10th graders on January 30th and February 1st.
Ms. Otero stated that the mid year SIP review will be held on February 1st. She stated that scores have increased from 5% to 8%, in all levels, for 9th and 10th grades. The math scores have either maintained or decreased by 2% to 3%. Ms. Otero explained that the first assessment test consisted of 60+ questions and the second assessment test consisted of 80+ questions. The District has not explained why the second assessment test increased by 20+ questions. The science testing for 11th graders is currently taking place. In writing, of all students tested, 10% scored 3.5 or above. This test was administered last September.
Ms. Gans presented an update concerning the 8 period day. She was told by the District to postpone the voting process, which was to be held at the end of this month. The District has funding now for 11 high schools to implement the 8 period day. Mr. Blackmon stated that the voting for an 8 period day is done on a yearly basis. Ms. Gans stated that she has scheduled a faculty meeting on February 13th to further discuss this issue. Hopefully, she will be able to have the faculty vote during the early release day in February. Mr. Zequiera distributed information on the 8 period day. He was directed by Ms. Hyatt to make his presentation during open forum.
Ms. Gans and Ms. Otero discussed the career academies/majors concept. It was explained that academies are small communities within a school. Gables will offer the following academies: Family & Consumer Sciences, Fine & Performing Arts, International Business, and IB/Advanced Academics.
Mr. Zequiera continued with his presentation concerning the 8 period day. He stated that some concerns of teachers include too many preps and teaching an additional class. Ms. Gans stated that teachers, by contract, are required 3 preps.
