The Coral Gables senior High School EESAC meeting was called to order by Chairperson Stephanie Hofmann at 2:50 pm. A quorum was established. Introductions were made by all present. The minutes from the December 10, 2007 meeting were reviewed. Ms. Hyatt motioned to accept the minutes as written. The motion was seconded. By consensus, the minutes were accepted as written. The agenda was issued.
I. School Improvement Plan mid-year review
A. Copies of the SIP mid-year review were distributed.
Ms. Otero, Assistant Principal, thoroughly reviewed the SIP
mid-year review document. The EESAC provided input to be
included in the final draft. By consensus, the EESAC approved
the SIP mid-year review.
B. Pregnant Teen Statistics were questioned; two alternatives were
mentioned:
COPE and TAP programs. Pregnant teens can choose to remain in
regular public school.
II. Secondary School Reform
Mr. Blackmon, SSR Design Team, presented an update on Secondary
School Reform at Coral Gables High School:
A. An upcoming early release day and a professional development day
will be used to further team building and further educate the
faculty.
B. A blog https://cavalier.edublog.org has been created.
C. The faculty was surveyed as to which academy would be their
preference.
D. An ‘Open Forum’ for teachers was held to express concerns
regarding SSR, to highlight positive aspects of SSR
implementation, and to brainstorm solutions to possible problems.
Mr. Blackmon expressed that, as a whole, he felt the faculty was well aware of and well informed about Secondary School Reform.
Mr. Blackmon stated the decision to implement an 8 period day for the next school year rests solely on the outcome of the faculty vote. He also expressed that he felt the faculty was viewing the 8 period day more favorably.
III . Old Business
A. Vision/Mission Committee
The Vision/Mission committee (Ms.Gans, Dr. Diaz, Ms. Jackson,
Ms. Munnerlyn, Miss Gonzalez) will meet on Jan. 29 at 7:45 a.m.
IV. Open Forum
Concerns regarding teen pregnancy on campus were discussed.
Ms. Gans, Principal, clarified M-DCPS policy on pregnant teens on
campus. She stated that options such as COPE were available but
that students had the right to remain at their regular school.
V. Announcements
A. FCAT Writing Workshop for 10th grade will be on January 25 &
February 6 all day in the auditorium.
B. IPEGS – mid-year review will be on January 23rd and 24th.
C. Ms. Reitsma, Business Community representative, commended Coral
Gables High School for its participation in the Junior Orange Bowl
parade.
D. Mr. Levenstein, student representative, made inquiries on
financial help available for IB students who need to purchase
books.
E. Mr. Zequeira – announced that both ‘Highlights’ and ‘Cavaleon’
received top recognition for their work.
F. Ms. Jackson, parent representative, made inquires on how to find
out the status of parent volunteers.
G. Ms. Hofmann announced the next ESSAC meeting will be on February
11, 2008
