Topics Covered:

The Coral Gables High School ESSAC meeting was called to order at 2:50 pm by Stephanie Hofman, chairperson. A quorum was established. The minutes of the November 10th meeting were reviewed and accepted. The agenda was issued. Introductions of the board members present were made.

I. Parent Portal Assistance was discussed by Dr. Diaz. The District portal assistance will be reduced because of budget cuts on staff that maintain the portal. Each individual school will now have to assist parents with questions regarding accessing the portal.

II. Gifted Program 2009-10 – Next year we may be looking at adding full time gifted to our program of offered classes. There are many benefits: more challenging curriculum to meet the needs of the gifted population and the gifted program generates more teachers-more funding; now, on the other hand, there are disadvantages: a scheduling nightmare. Yet Mrs. Gans feels it would be worth it for CGSH. More discussion ensued. Most present were pleased with the program.

III. The Language Arts Department Chairperson (Paula Munnerlyn) and the Reading Department Chairperson (Mr. Campagna) reported on what’s being used in the form of activities and support for the writing and reading skills tests.

Open Forum
Mold in new building- Mr. Zequeira said some teachers in the New Building mentioned their concern about the mold in the New Building and what’s being done. Dr. Diaz said as Ms. Otero, Assistant Principal, nor Mr. Miret, Assistant Principal were not present to respond, he would get back to us with an update. Dr. Diaz did say that he had offered to move any teacher who had concerns to other rooms., none got back to him. Mr. Blackmon said this is a District dilemma, and the District needed to address it.

The next EESAC meeting is January 12, 2009
