Topics Covered:

The Coral Gables High School ESSAC meeting was called to order at 2:48 p.m. by Stephanie Hofmann, EESAC Chairperson. A quorum was established. Introductions were made. The minutes of the March 9th EESAC meeting were read and accepted. There were no corrections. The agenda was issued.

Agenda:

I. SIP update- Principal Gans stated that Gables was on schedule in the implementation of SIP strategies. She also stated that the due date of the SIP End-of-Year Review has not yet been determined.

II. Campus Maintenance- Principal Gans stated that some students, possibly Gables students, are defacing private and public property, in particular, the City Of Coral Gables free trolleys and homes within a 2 block radius of the high school’s campus. The City of Coral Gables is threatening to cancel the free trolley service for students because of the graffiti; Mrs. Gans remarked that even our school busses are falling victim to the defacing. Mrs. Gans spoke to Ms. DePaola, a club sponsor, about getting clubs together and painting the defaced residential areas with donated paint. Mrs. Jackson discussed the Coral Gables paint permit; however, Mrs. Gans said we do not need a permit since we are just touching up with the same color paint.

III. Open Forum
A. Mrs. Watson, PTSA President, stated that FPL will not run additional power lines on Bird Road.
B. Teacher Recommendations
Mrs. Reitsma stated that recommendations for students should not be taken lightly by the recommending teacher. She requests that Coral Gables faculty members be serious when they write recommendations for students, providing substance as well as quantity. Her suggestion, if an adequate recommendation can not be written-then don’t write one. More discussion ensued.
C. Coral Gables High School has applied for the FLAP grant. It is a foreign language (Chinese) based grant. An elementary school and a middle school within the highschool’s feeder pattern would also be involved in the grant’s implementation. The grant is for $300,000.
