The Coral Gables Senior High School EESAC meeting was called to order at 2:55 p.m., by chairman, Stephanie Hofmann. Introductions were made. A quorum was established. The minutes of the October 13, 203 EESAC meeting were distributed to all present. Mr. Zoller made a motion to approve the minutes as presented. The motion was seconded. By consensus, the minutes of the October 13, 2003 EESAC meeting were approved as presented. Ms. Hofmann distributed the minutes of the Curriculum Committee meeting, which was held on November 3rd.
Ms. Alvarez distributed copies of the BUGS (Bringing Up Grades) flyer that will be sent to parents of students who received a grade of D or F on their report cards. The date of this seminar has been changed due to the late arrival of the report cards and also, because the School Board has suspended after school activities during the week of November 16th - 22nd due to the AFTTA meetings. Ms. Alvarez stated that approximately 1685 students received either a grade of D or F in either one or more subjects for the first grading period.
Ms. Alvarez distributed the 2003-2004 SPEP review of progress. This is a review of the first quarter with listings of progress in each category of the SPEP. In the reading category, there are approximately 600 sophomores in Level I & II. The GRAD program will be implemented again next year. There are approximately 150 voucher students remaining on campus and most of these students are either Level I or Level II students.
In the Math category, there are 945 students in Level I & II. Learning gains are significantly higher in Math as compared to learning gains in Reading. In the Science category, classes are utilizing the Media Center resources and approximately 294 science labs have taken place thus far during the year.
In the Advanced Academics category, approximately 45 students who met the IB requirements last year are now enrolled at Gables. In the Writing Skills category, the writing prompts are e-mailed to the school from the District.
Ms. Hofmann announced that the Bylaws Committee will meet on November 25th, at 2:30 pm, in the Media Center. An amendment to the EESAC bylaws changing the EESAC meeting days will be discussed.
The next EESAC meeting will be held on Monday, December 8, 2003, at 2:45pm, in the Media Center. The EESAC meeting was adjourned at 3:30pm, by Ms. Hofmann, Chairman.
