Topics Covered:

The Coral Gables Senior High School EESAC meeting was called to order at 2:57pm, by
Stephanie Hofmann, EESAC Chairman. A quorum was established. The minutes of the
January 12, 2004 EESAC meeting were presented. Mr. Blackmon made a motion to
approve these minutes, the motion was seconded by consensus, and the minutes were approved.
An announcement was made that Ms. Fernandez will be taking minutes in the absence of Ms.Orgaz. A SPEP Mid-year review packet was distributed and Ms. Alvarez presented the following information: A review of the reading /writing scores, an additional teacher has been hired to facilitate the pull-out process which now impacts 480 students, after school tutoring attendance has grown from 7 to 25 students. In addition a Math pull out process has been implemented as well. The science classes have increased utilization of the media center and approximately 350 science labs have taken place. Coral Gables High School will present its SPEP midyear review at ACCESS Center 4, on February 25, 2004.
Ms. Alvarez distributed an updated FCAT tutoring schedule and gave an update on B.U.G.S. Ms. Alvarez further informed the committee that 1691 students have received at least a D or F in an academic area. Dr. Diaz ordered 10 ACT disks in addition to the 50 SAT disks that students can check out and take home to practice. Also, noted was that tutoring has doubled. Mr. Lee Taylor wanted to know if the teachers that stayed after school were being paid salary or were being paid hourly or there on their free time. Ms. Alvarez said all teachers were being paid hourly.
Ms. Hofmann acknowledged Dr. Martinez & Ms. Alvarez for all the hard work and effort they have done with helping the students achieve the required state level.
Dr. Martinez presented the following updated information as to the traffic situation.: Dr. Martinez met last Wednesday, February 4th 2004. At 8:30 am with Barbara Miranda, assistant to Mr. Barrero along with Albert Delgado from the city. A positive meeting was held with an idea for a new parent drop off that would not interfere with traffic as well as parking issues. They are considering a new location along Riviera towards the school; this means shifting parking spaces or possibly using the area near the softball field. Once the new building is completed 50 new parking slots will be available. Dr. Martinez will keep us updated on any new developments. As for the new food pavilion, it is coming along and should be finished in 3 weeks time. New building should be completed in 12 months. Mr. Taylor suggested the idea of having an underground/above ground parking garage built. Ms. Reitsma agreed. Dr. Martinez advised that a parking garage was out of the question due to too many city issues. Mr. Taylor asked if public relations could highlight positive issues at Gables High, since the FCAT has generated so much negative coverage in the papers, Dr. Martinez advised him that the “Gables Gazette” has been promoting Coral Gables Sr. High in a positive light with an article soon to come out highlighting the school.

Ms. Hofmann announced the next meeting will be held in the media center on March 8, 2004 and adjourned the meeting at 3:25.p.m
