Topics Covered:

The Coral Gables Senior High School EESAC meeting was called to order at 2:50p.m., by chairman, Stephanie Hofmann. Introductions were made. A quorum was established. The minutes of the November 8, 2004 EESAC meeting were distributed to all present. Mr. Borrego made a motion to approve the minutes of the November 8, 2004 EESAC meeting as amended. The motion was seconded. By consensus, the minutes of the November 8, 2004 EESAC meeting were approved as amended.

Mrs. Jones-Carey, assistant principal, distributed copies of the Attendance Policies and Procedures, 2004-2005, Parents and Students. Mrs. Jones-Carey stated that students are allowed two warning tardies per nine weeks. She stated that attendance is taken during homeroom, which is in the first block of the day and is either first or second period. Visits to college and university campuses are considered personal absences and are not excusable.

Ms. Alvarez stated that students may be on an eight period block schedule next year. Each block will be 90 minutes in length, with lunch during 5th and 6th periods. The blocks will be: A—periods 1, 3, 5, 7; B—periods 2, 4, 6, 8. She stated that Miami High and Hialeah High have the eight period block schedule. She stated that this type of scheduling will allow IB and ESOL students two elective classes. This type of scheduling means that teachers will have to teach an extra period and will not receive a supplement. She also stated that this type of scheduling will reduce class size. Ms. Alvarez stated that only 9th and 10th grade students needing remediation are receiving it. Those 11th and 12th grade students who need remediation are not receiving it because of the lack of classroom space.

Mr. Blackmon, UTD steward, distributed copies of the ballot for UTD contract waiver. The waiver states: Ballot for UTD Contract Required for Coral Gables Senior High School for the 2005-2006 School year:
To facilitate implementation of an 8-period schedule, I agree-contingent
upon the commitment by M-DCPS to enhance staffing at Coral Gables
Senior High School- to waive, for 2005-2006, the portion of the UTD-M-
DCPS contract concerning “Supplements for Extra Teaching Periods.”
The referenced paragraph would be understood to be modified thus:
“To become eligible to receive an extra teaching period supplement,
secondary teachers must be currently teaching (five) six instructional
periods and elect to teach a (sixth) seventh period.”
Mr. Blackmon, UTD steward, presented the following results of the faculty vote concerning the eight period block schedule: 150 faculty members voted; 95 voted in favor of the eight period block schedule; 55 voted against the eight period block schedule. The vote was 63% in favor of the eight period block schedule. Mr. Blackmon stated that teachers will teach 6 classes and have 2 periods for planning. Ms. Alvarez stated that there will not be a common day.

Ms. Melton made a motion to approve the eight period block schedule as presented to the faculty. The motion was seconded. By consensus, EESAC approved the eight period block schedule as presented to the faculty. EESAC will now send the waiver to Region IV and it will then be sent to the M-DCPS for final approval.

The next EESAC meeting will be held on Monday, January 10, 2005, at 2:45pm, in the Media Center. The EESAC meeting was adjourned at 3:55pm, by Ms. Hofmann, Chairman.
