Welcome by Mr Casals
Introduction of New Members
Topics Covered:
Uniform Vote—Mr Casals explained how the uniform vote system works. Parents of seniors cannot vote. Mr. Milliken and student government members spoke in approval of uniforms. Uniforms are an ideal option for parents, from a financial stance. Additionally, it would relieve some of the peer pressures students may feel. Ideally, club shirts would be acceptable on certain, specified days.
Major Rountree spoke in favor of uniforms. He mentioned students will behave better if they are in a uniform. Additionally, from a security stance, it would be easier to identify students who belong on campus.
A committee would have to be formed, consisting of administration, EESAC, PTSA, and other school organizations to address the issue.
Mr Casals spoke in favor of uniforms, as well. He mentioned research has shown that school testing scores will generally improve at uniform schools.
Ms Veronica Martin motioned in favor of sending uniform notification to parents, seconded by Mr Milliken. Unanimously passed.
SIP
Ms Challenger discussed the mid-year update of the School Improvement Plan. We use our baseline and winter data and compare what we did and did not improve on. In reading we improved. We will continue to use our instructional coaches, Spring Break academy, and Saturday school. We will continue common planning to benefit students.
Algebra, we are basically within the initial range, but are pushing remediations. Geometry, we have improved 5 points. Writing and biology were not necessary to report. Biology we do have to improve and are in the process of remediation.
Saturday Success academy is offered every Saturday.
Professional Development is continuing for coaches to guide and drive school teachers. PD’s will continue for all core and non-core teachers.
It was suggested that we begin making announcements notifying the students of the Spring Break academy immediately, so students don’t make plans other plans.
In the future, we need to document all tutorial services offered, to include in the SIP, whether they be teacher or student led.
Motion to approve the mid-year SIP by Ms Rodrigues, seconded by major Rountree, unanimously approved.
Minutes
Minutes from the committee’s November 29th meeting were reviewed.
Minutes must be amended to show Ms Muñiz-Pellicer was present, and was marked absent in error.
Minutes to be approved pending amendments Ms Rabara motioned and seconded by Ms Alexis.
Ratification of Funding Request form
Ms Martin explained the procedure and application forms necessitated to request funds from the NMB EESAC committee, to include a timeline and budget.
Funding applications would need to be turned in to the President, secretary and/or Ms Martin, who is volunteering to be the on-site-liaison.
Discussion ensued as to whether or not a fund requestor should be present at the EESAC meeting. It was decided that a representative from the organization requesting funds should be present to facilitate discussion and expedite matters.
Motion to approve the funding guidelines with suggested amendments, made by Major Rountree and seconded by Ms Martin. Unanimously approved.
