Topics Covered

Ms. Ames called the meeting to order at 8:33 a.m. and welcomed everyone back for the New Year.

Ms. Russell will e-mail the minutes from the November 2006 meeting to all in attendance for any changes. A hard copy will also be placed in their mail boxes.

OLD BUSINESS: None

NEW BUSINESS: Waiver for Block Scheduling. Zashia Santiago was for block scheduling because it would be easier for her. It would alleviate her having to attend night school since she would be able to obtain the credits during the day.

Ms. Ames was for block scheduling also because it would give teachers time to get into the subject matter more.

One reason for not having block scheduling is the attendance issue. When a student misses class it is like missing two class sessions instead of one.

Ms. Valladares said there were problems with tutoring in the schools that had block scheduling. The teachers hated it because of the constant pulling of students from class, especially when they only have the class twice a week.

Ms. Cooper said her son has block scheduling and likes it.

Ms. Clarington said she thinks block scheduling will be a plus, even with six or eight classes. Ms. Ames queried if block scheduling would be a problem with the HOSA students. She also asked what the process was for asking for block scheduling.

The consensus among those present was to take the proposal to the faculty at the staff meeting this afternoon for their vote.

Mrs. King asked if she could have a student and a teacher speak to the faculty at the staff meeting this evening about block scheduling. Zashia Santiago agreed to speak on behalf of the students and Ms. Clarington agreed to speak for the teachers.

Ms. Allen said she is for block scheduling.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:53 a.m.
