Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of minutes: Mrs. Robledo, called the meeting to order at 8:20 a.m. The minutes from November 14, 2006, were reviewed, corrected, and approved.

Principal’s message: Mrs. Gonzalez began her message by wishing all members a Happy New Year and reminding them that Carver is still the No. 1 middle school in the state. Mrs. Gonzalez informed the Council that Mrs. Corzo, who heads our staff development program, was involved in a serious accident over the holiday break. Mrs. Corzo and her husband sustained significant injuries in Cozumel, and she will be out indefinitely. Mrs. Gonzalez explained that the brain-based teaching that Mrs. Corzo has been working with is at the learning stage this year and will be in the implementation stage next year. “Her recovery is the most important thing,” said Mrs. Gonzalez.
Mrs. Gonzalez then explained that over the break she received an e-mail notification of an EESAC requirement to review the information from the District’s Strategic Planning Focus Group and to complete a survey of members. She explained that this is based on District-wide plan and covers a two to five year period of implementation. Mrs. Stroleny then reviewed the plan with the Council. The purpose of the focus group is to highlight the District’s progress against the 2005-08 strategic plan and to obtain input that may be needed to ensure that the goals are met. A graph showed that improvement is being made at every grade level for reading and math based on FCAT scores. The packet then listed stakeholder perceptions of the school district. Following was a list of district initiatives that have been implemented to address the perceptions. Categories included academics and system-wide accountability, student health and safety, stakeholder engagement and communications, human resources, business processes, and governance. Next the packet noted some areas where improvement is needed and “next steps” that need to be taken. The second half of the packet presented most of the same information in a different format. Because of the time, the teachers were released from the meeting to teach their classes. Mrs. Stroleny and the parents moved to the media center to finish reviewing the packet and to complete the surveys. The teachers were asked to complete the surveys and return them to Mrs. Stroleny as soon as possible.
