Principal's message, Mrs. I. Artime (Hornet Happenings)

- Spring 2026 F.A.S.T.
  • 6th grade students took their FAST Math exam yesterday.
  • Testing calendar for the remainder of this month is available online.
  • Students will be taking Advanced Placement (AP) exams this week; be sure that they eat a good breakfast and get a good night's rest.
- Teacher Appreciation Week
  • Ms. Artime and Mr. Sands discussed the Teacher Appreciation Week schedule of events that was sponsored by our PTSA. They incorporated our global connections theme by providing lunch from various countries; huge THANK YOU to our PTSA for their continuous support.
- NJHS Induction Ceremony
  • On May 06, 2026, approximately 55 students were inducted into Carver's chapter of the National Junior Honor Society.
- School Devices
  • Information regarding the return of school issued devices has been sent to teachers, students and parents. Please adhere to the dates and times provided.
- School Uniforms for 2026-2027 School Year
  • Ms. Artime discussed the EESAC vote regarding school uniform changes for the 2026-2027 school year.
  • She mentioned that several students have prepared PowerPoint presentation regarding school uniform policy (see Announcements / Open Forum).

School Improvement Process monitoring, implementation, review, etc.), Mr. S. Rivers, Assistant Principal
  • Mr. Rivers mentioned that the Leadership Team is working on the 2025-2026 End-Of-Year (EOY) Review and Reflection, Phase VII of the School Improvement Process (SIP).
  • Findings from the EOY Review and Reflection will be shared at the next EESAC meeting.
- Digital Resources
  • Mr. Rivers discussed The Cognia Mid-Cycle Progress Report and what schools are tasked with completing on or before May 22, 2026.
  • Mr. Rivers discussed Standard 23 (focuses on the integration of digital resources into instruction).
  • Data was solicited from teachers and used to complete the Cognia Mid-Cycle Review document for the District.
  • A list of digital resources will be shared with teachers.

Old/New business

  • Mr. Rivers informed the committee that the 2025-2026 Awards Ceremony will be held June 03 and June 04. Invitations to the parents of the awards recipients have been sent.
  • Ms. Artime informed the committee that the School Climate Survey window has been extended to May 29, 2026. Surveys are for parents, teachers, and students. If you have not completed the survey, you are encouraged to do so.
  • Mr. Rivers discussed the 2025-2026 E-O-Y Assurances Checklist; Verification of EESAC Compliance document.
  • Honor Roll luncheon will be held at school. Students will be treated to lunch from the Crepe Maker.
  • New Student Orientations will take place on May 26 (International Education students) and May 28 (International Studies students). Information has been shared with the incoming parents.

Announcements/Open Forum
  • Several students prepared a PowerPoint presentation regarding the 2026-2027 school uniform. They are proposing that an allowance for 1-2 sweatpants days be granted for the 2026-2027 school year.
  • Ms. Artime thanked them for their presentation. PowerPoint and proposal will be shared and discussed with the Leadership Team and the Uniform Committee.
  • Several parents and students expressed their opposition to eliminating shorts from the school uniform; mostly related to Miami's climate and the heat.
  • Several parents and teachers expressed their agreement with the elimination of shorts from the uniform. They indicated the there are certain rules / policies in place (i.e. uniform policy) that should be respected.
  • Some of the teachers present discussed how constantly addressing violations to the uniform policy disrupts their lessons / activities and negatively impacts their instructional time.
  • Ms. Folse made a motion to reopen the vote regarding the 2026-2027 uniform policy. Motion was seconded by Grayton.
  • 3 Members were in favor of a second vote (3 yays - C. Folse, Carrero, G. Folse)
  • 10 Members were not in favor of a second vote (10 nays - Rivers, Sands, Artime, Fernandez, Valdes, Rodriguez, Ruhi-Lopez, Hernandez, Khan, Garcia)
  • 2 Members abstained from voting (Gutierrez and Vinat)
