Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Ingrid Robledo, chairman, called the EESAC meeting to order at 8:20am. The previous minutes were reviewed and revised minutes were approved by consensus.

Mrs. Robledo introduced waiver approval required in for the continuation of the block schedule. This was discussed with the faculty and all agreed that the block schedule is beneficial to students because they have a solid block of time to work with the students. Fifty minutes is just not enough time to cover a complete lesson. The faculty voted in favor of continuing with the block schedule for the school year 2003-2004.

Mrs. Gonzalez invited parents to attend a Parent Involvement Workshop, which will take place on May 17th at Booker T. Washington. She explained that people from different access centers will be there to inform parents how the system works. They discuss EESAC and PTSA and review the complexity of the system.

Mrs. Robledo announced that EESAC elections would be held in the month of May. Mrs. Gonzalez mentioned that last year it worked out very well when we did elections at the general meeting. The next PTSA general meeting will be on April 22nd at 7:00 pm and PTSA nominations, as well as, EESAC nominations will take place at that time. Mrs. Robledo will send out a flyer to the following elementary schools: G.W. Carver, Coral Way, Sunset, Sunset Elementary and G.W. Carver Middle School to inform parents of elections. Mrs. Stroleny will manage with the Lead Teachers of those schools for distribution of flyers. Mr. Sands will be in charge of student elections and Mrs. Robledo will coordinate the elections for faculty representation.

In Pete Cabrera’s absence, Mr. Sands highlighted next years School Performance Excellence Plan objectives. For the first objective, which is Reading, homeroom libraries have been established which have been very successful and also achieve the thirty-minute mandatory reading. In the second objective, Science, the vertical teaming is working very well. The pretest has already been administered and are now waiting the results of the FCAT and the post-test will be administered soon. In the third objective, German, teachers have asked 100% of students in the IS program to take the AP test on May 5th. Ms. Stroleny feels that they have nothing to lose because they can always retake the test at a later time. Mrs. Robledo has coordinated AP workshops with Florida International University and the College Board for the faculty and feels that teachers will be well equipped to prepare students for these exams. Mrs. Gonzalez stated that there will be a curriculum meeting next week. This meeting will be perfect for the SPEP committee to begin work on next year’s goal.

Louise Gramling announced that they visited California for the National Youth Storytellers Guild where two G.W. Carver participated along with 11 other students from across the nation. They had the opportunity to attend concerts and workshops and on Saturday they performed and were judged. Caprice Turner did very well and received a trophy for sate finalist. Alma Hoyos also excelled and received 2 trophies for outstanding storytelling in her division. Also four G.W. Carver students will receive Science awards from NASA and will have the opportunity to attend Space Camp next summer. Mr. Sands had begun an African American reading chain and Mrs. Gonzalez has suggested doing a Holocaust reading chain, which has never been done before.

Mrs. Gonzalez asked that we please read Neighbors regularly as they do publish G.W. Carver achievements and awards highlights the successes of our students and teachers. Mrs. Robledo went on to mention that G. W. Carver students won first place in MiniConcurso’s drama, poetry and impromptu categories and 2nd place in the project. G.W. Carver Middle School had representation of the German, French and Spanish Programs. Mrs. Gonzalez encouraged the board to attend next years MiniConcurso competitions and assured us that we would be very impressed with the outstanding performance of our students. She also thanked the teachers in charge of preparing students: Mrs. Moghani, Ms. Dudouet and Mrs. Robledo.

Mrs. Robledo was invited by the College Board to be an AP National Reader and would go to California from June 12 to June 20 to attend a workshop.

Annette Daniels announced that JV track girls got third place in the county, second place in discus event, first place in mile run and first place in tennis.

Mrs. Robledo thanked all members for their attendance and adjourned the meeting at 8:55 am.
