Topics Covered

1. Call to order: 3:15 p.m.
2. Update by Principal, Betty Riera
a. Discussed the future plans for the expansion of the school; grades will be Kindergarten through Eight.
b. Discussed that the results of the 2003 FCAT will be in by the end of the school year, and they will be used to determine the academic achievement of the school.
c. Reminded the EESAC members that the students had taken the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) this past week, and that these scores, along with FCAT, SAT, and Brigance scores would be used to determine student placement for the 2003-2004 school year.
d. Explained that the Science Fair will be taking place during the last week of May, and that this was beneficial to all students, especially the 5th grade students because they had taken the Science FCAT and the Science Fair was a great way to reinforce science skills taught in the classroom.
e. Discussed that ESOL students will be taking the ESOL test at the end of the school year to monitor progress in the ESOL program.
f. Reminded all teachers and members that Career Week would be between May 12 and May 16, 2003.

3. Question/Answer Session/ Recommendations/ Comments:
a. Cristina Aguilar- Recommended that students should have P.E. uniforms for the upcoming school year because she has noticed that her son's pants are always ripped because of doing P.E. in their school uniform.
i. Betty Riera commented that the problem with P.E. uniforms is that students in Kindergarten through fifth grade would need lockers and a changing room, which were not on the school grounds.
ii. Cristina Aguilar- Recommended that perhaps the students could put on shorts underneath their school uniform to avoid having the students wear their uniforms during P.E.
iii. Betty Riera thanked Cristina Aguilar for her suggestion and told her that she would take that advice into consideration for the upcoming school year.
b. Scarlett Vasquez- Commented on the fact that the parents were very happy about the expansion of the school and thanked Ms. Riera for giving the students the opportunity to stay at Mater Academy East for middle school.
c. Rene Perez- Asked where the End of the Year Ceremony would be taking place?
i. Betty Riera replied that this year, Mater Academy East was going to have a graduation and awards ceremony, without a student show because the school had grown so much that there was no time for each class to put on a performance, as was the case with previous years.
ii. Betty Riera stated that the Graduation and Awards Ceremony would take place at the same location as the year before.

4. The meeting adjourned at 4:05 p.m.
