The meeting commenced on Wednesday, February 1st at 4:17 PM by EESAC chairperson Ms. L. Belkin. The first item on the agenda was the review and approval of the minutes from the last meeting. The minutes were read, Ms. Covone motioned to approve the minutes and Ms. Conroy second the motion; hence, minutes were approved. Ms. Belkin informed everyone that changes made to the bylaws will be presented at next meeting. The second item on the agenda was the mid-year review of the School Improvement Plan (SIP). Reading department reported that overall, sixth grade students had an increase of 23% proficiency from Baseline to Winter Interim scores, followed by seventh grade with 1% increase in the general population with a 1% decrease in relation to students with disabilities. In addition, eight grade students demonstrated a 23% increase in proficiency. They will ensure ongoing increments in results by continuously implementing data chats, software programs, reading initiative during Homeroom as well as professional development for teachers in their daily instruction. Science department reported that eighth grade students demonstrated a 4% proficiency increase since Baseline assessment. The department agreed that their strongest branch is nature/science and their lowest performing branch to be life science. They will ensure ongoing increments in results by continuously implementing departmental designated crunch time packets, following with pacing guide, partaking of reading initiative, consulting in data chats, reinforcement of strategies previously covered, increasing rigor through several resources, as well as professional development for teachers in their daily instruction. Writing department reported an increase of .05 on the writing prompt results assigned for the eighth grade students for Winter Interim. They will ensure ongoing increments in results by continuously implementing classroom instruction in writing, more specifically instruction in word choice, details, voice; additionally, increase instruction in grammar and punctuation. Moreover, exposing students to workshops, for example the Saturday Writing Camp, which its objective is to, enhanced writing skills for those students whose scores need to improve. Also the department agrees to expose students to journal writing, book reports, including writing contests; which emphasizes the importance of writing. Math department reported an increase in proficiency in all three grade levels. Sixth grade with an increase of 10%, seventh grade 18% and eight grade 24% from the Winter Interim assessment as compared to the Baseline. They will ensure ongoing increments in results by continuously implementing data chats and introducing additional support through Saturday academy for 7th and 8th grade students who have been identified through data. Ms. Covone motioned to approve the information covered and presented for the mid-year review of the SIP and Ms. Conroy second the motion; hence, School Improvement Plan mid-year review was approved.
Lastly, comments and/or concerns were asked by Ms. L. Belkin to the student body representative, no comments mentioned. Ms. Belkin also reminded everyone that voting for the aforementioned proposals will take place at the next meeting, specific date will be forthcoming. Ms. Covone motioned to adjourn the meeting and Ms. Conroy second the motion, meeting concluded at 4:47 PM.
