Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Ingrid Robledo, chairman, called the EESAC meeting to order at 8:10am. The previous minutes were reviewed and revised. Minutes were approved by consensus.

Mrs. Robledo, following the bylaws, reminded the council that the chair must be elected annually by the members at the first meeting of the school year. Ms. Gramling nominated Mrs. Robledo. Nomination was approved and ratified by unanimous consensus. Mrs. Robledo thanked everybody for their support.

Mrs. Robledo opened the floor for discussion of the items related with the agenda. Mrs. Gonzalez went over the committees’ decision to spend EESAC monies on technology. She hired a new technology teacher, Mrs. Miyares. Carver teachers are in the process of determining which software is needed. The software will be recommended through department chairs. Mrs. Gonzalez explained that the school would provide supplementary funds in addition to what EESAC will provide for this purpose.

Mrs. Gonzalez went over the objectives in the School Improvement Plan. Mrs. Szmulewicz read the writing objectives for students. Mrs. Robledo and Mrs. Gonzalez suggested adding a percentage value in order to make the objectives measurable.

Mrs. Gonzalez explained that all departments have developed strategies to tackle oral proficiency language curriculum for foreign language students. It was one of the objectives for the year. Teachers are in the process of establishing a rubric and pre- and post-tests.

Eighth grade science students achieved the highest numbers in the district. Incoming 6th graders are low in data analysis skills.

Carver is in the process of determining whether our school made adequate progress in the ESOL department. Depending on State’s requirement, it has not been determined if 29 students who did not make adequate progress will be counted against the school. We are in the process of finding out, but will be following strategies regardless of outcome. Mrs. Gonzalez went on to read the school’s Performance Excellence Plan. This plan involves the parents, students and teachers in the process. Mrs. Robledo and Mrs. Stroleny will go to Booker T. Washington Senior High on September 8, 2003 to review the plan. In addition, members of Access Center IV will be coming to our school to review the plan as well.

Mrs. Gonzalez expressed her thanks and appreciation to all the teachers involved in the process. She specifically acknowledged Mrs. Szmulewicz for a job well done putting together the objectives for the School Improvement Plan.
Mr. John Duvey suggested that we share the information regarding the low data analysis skills level of incoming sixth graders with elementary schools in our feeder pattern so they can target these weaknesses and provide an action plan.
Mrs. Robledo and Mrs. Gonzalez informed members of the great success Carver had last year with the Advanced Placement exams. In the German IS program, out of 100 percent of students tested, 84 percent passed the Advanced Placement exam. She congratulated all departments for a job well done. Mrs. Robledo also mentioned that five teachers participated in AP summer institutes workshops geared towards writing and implementing strategies for IS and IE students.
Mrs. Gramling announced that one of her students had been invited to participate in the National Storytelling Festival. This outstanding honor goes to Alma Rose Hoyos.

Mrs. Robledo thanked everyone for coming and adjourned the meeting at 8:52 a.m.
