Topics Covered

1. Approval of Minutes: Last month’s meeting minutes were reviewed and approved.
Ms. Klein welcomed the following guests to the meeting: Ms. Kativa Edwards-Jerry, 1st Grade Teacher, Mr. Roody Estriplet, 2nd Grade Teacher, Ms. Tameka Scott-Smith, 5th Grade Teacher, and Ms. Chantea Salley, 5th Grade Teacher.
2. SIP Reviews/Updates:
There will be a review of the School Improvement Plan (SIP) by the Region on September 18 – 28, 2012. At that time the Region will review the document so that it can be updated and uploaded by October 2012. A copy will be distributed to each grade level chairperson. The document should be referred to frequently to ensure that the strategies suggested at the end of the 2011-2012 school year are implemented this year. This is a state developed template and the fields delineated in the document are required. Therefore, please ensure that when you are collaboratively planning with your grade level, you are cognizant of the strategies that you recommended for this school year.
3. RtI/Leadership Team Reviews/Updates:
The RtI Leadership Team will be meeting in September. If you have students are of a concern to you, please begin to take the proper steps in the RtI process. There will be F.A.I.R. testing in September. Ms. Quintero, Reading Coach, will be entering the demographic information in the PMRN system this week. Upon completion, F.A.I.R. testing will begin immediately to allow the primary grades enough time to complete testing. Grades 3-5 will be tested by Ms. Quintero in the Computer Lab. If students are in the “yellow” or “green” zone, you may want to reconsider having them staffed. Ms. Suzann Farmer will be our interventionist this year. Ms. Baluja, Media Specialist, will also be conducting interventions for selected ESOL students. Success Maker will be used as the intervention strategy in grades K-5. However, this is contingent upon F.A.I.R results. There are only a set number of licenses and grades 3-5 have priority.
Question (Welch): Can primary go to the PC Lab?
Answer (Klein): The number of licenses for this program is limited. There are only a certain number of users allowed since it is paid for by the District. The older version of Success Maker might be available to the primary grades, but it may not satisfy the District’s requirement for interventions. According to the SIP, Success Maker is the intervention of choice, but some students may still need Voyager Interventions.

4. Open Forum Discussion:
School Operations
Thank you to our visitors for attending this meeting. In the past grade level chairpersons were not required to attend. Ms. Chaneqa Wooten would like to step down as the primary representative. Ms. Crystel Moore volunteered for this role. The roster will be updated accordingly by the recording secretary.
The faculty voting members are as follows:
Principal Ms. Linda G. Klein
EESAC Chairperson Ms. Amparo Quintero
UTD Steward Ms. Joann Welch
Primary Representative Ms. Crystel Moore
Intermediate Representative Ms. Marina A. Prieto
There are five (5) voting faculty members. We are compliant with EESAC laws and bylaws. EESAC requires that no more than 49% of EESAC be comprised of Miami Dade County School Board employees.
Curriculum Issues
Baseline Writing assessments have been completed. Baseline testing in Reading and Mathematics for grades K-5 is ongoing this week and next week. Please see memorandum.
Foresight Testing: This testing series was ordered for grades 3-5. The tests will be administered next week. The tests will be scored by Foresight. The company will provide valuable data and should be used to guide your instruction.
Please read your email tomorrow as it pertains to Orientation scheduling for the students at Broadmoor.
School Board Policy 8510 (Wellness Policy) is posted in the Teacher’s Lounge. Please read. You may use the link below to access the policy.

We must refrain from giving students unhealthy treats. There is no chewing gum allowed at Broadmoor Elementary per Ms. Klein.

5. Budget Reviews/Updates:
Question (Edwards-Jerry): Textbooks are still needed in first grade.
Answer (Klein): This issue should be raised at the next grade level chairperson meeting. Textbooks cannot be purchased with EESAC monies. These funds are used to purchase items that are beneficial to the entire school and not one particular grade level. The exact amount of EESAC funding for the 2012-2013 school year will not be known until my next FTE (full-time equivalent) meeting in October.
Questions (Welch): Is Accelerated Reader (AR) a school-wide or grade level issue?
Answer (Klein): EESAC can purchase this. The amount will be determined. However, Target donated $500 dollars that will be used to purchase books and AR quizzes.
Question (Welch): Can Kindergarten have AR?
Answer (Klein): We will check with Ms. Baluja to see what we will have in place this school year.
Question (Scott-Smith): Are we going to have Brain Child this year?
Answer (Klein): The licenses have been purchased. EESAC monies were not used. This was purchased with the school’s funds.
Ms. Klein indicated that there is a need for an additional teacher in Kindergarten. If you know someone who has been “surplused” and is certified for Elementary, please have that person contact me.
Question (Edwards-Jerry): What if there aren’t any surplus teachers?
Answer (Klein): I will not be able to place anyone who is not on the surplus list until after all teachers on this list have been placed. Probation teachers are not being hired this year. Several of our staff members were very fortunate that they were under reporting categories that were not part of the reduction in force.
Several teachers have asked about SES services. Providers will only be allowed to target the lowest 25% of students. Ms. Klein has no additional information, but will provide it as it becomes available to her.
6. Title I: no new Title I items.
7. New Business: no new business items.
8. Comments/Concerns: There are no comments/concerns from parents.
