Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of minutes: Mrs. Robledo called the meeting to order at 8:15 a.m. The minutes from August 31, 2012, were reviewed and approved.

SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Plan, (SIP). Mr. Rivers gave the SIP report. Last meeting, he said that the preliminary SIP was completed and submitted in July and that we had received some information from the District, which was used to update the SIP. We have since received additional information, particularly the 2013 Expected Levels of Performance, which he has been reviewing and incorporating into our SIP. For Reading, we are charged with the following: Increasing the percentage of students scoring Level 3 from 25 percent to 27 percent; increasing the percentage of students making learning gains from 81 percent to 86 percent; and increasing the percentage of students in the lower 25 percent making learning gains from 84 percent to 89 percent. For the CELLA (added to SIP this year), we are charged with the following: Increasing the percentage of students proficient in Listening/Speaking from 76 percent to 78 percent; increasing the percentage of students proficient in Reading from 69 percent to 71 percent; and increasing the percentage of students proficient in Writing from 66 percent to 68 percent.

For Mathematics, we are charged with increasing the percentage of students making learning gains from 91 percent to 95 percent. For Suspensions, we are charged with reducing the number of students in out-door-suspension by three. For Parental Involvement, we are charged with increasing the parent participation rate from 28 percent to 31 percent. The Civics EOC is not required to be included in the SIP until the 2014-2015 school year, and the US. History EOC is not required until the 2013-2014 school year.

For STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) we are charged with increasing the number of students that participate in skill competitions like Science Fair, SECME, and Fairchild Challenge. For CTE (Career and Technical Education), we are charged with increasing Social Studies teachers’ knowledge of CTE so that the skills can be integrated into their lesson plans. Mr. Rivers explained that updates on goals in Algebra EOC, Geometry EOC, Biology EOC, Science, Writing, and Attendance were not mentioned because we are expected to maintain our current levels of performance. Mr. Viscito asked whether the state has always dictated goals; Mrs. Stroleny and Mr. Rivers answered that state has always given direction with the increases. Mrs. Stroleny said we review data during and at the end of each year to assess whether we are reaching goals. At the next meeting, more baseline/interim data will be reported. There have been some challenges processing the Edusoft data this year.

Principal’s Message: Mrs. Stroleny said we have a new head custodian, Carl Springer, who started on Monday. She gave dates of upcoming events: Open House is on Wednesday, with the book fair running this week. Progress reports go home on September 21. Vision screening and BMI testing begins on September 24 and 25 and will be ongoing throughout the year. A teacher planning day is on September 26. The Club Fair is during homeroom on September 28. The magnet application period begins on October 1; we will begin our campus tours for parents of fifth-graders and also will host high school information sessions here for our eighth-graders. October 5 marks the German Heritage Luncheon. The Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (ALAS) will visit Carver on October 10. October 13 is the GIPA Oktoberfest and the Career Expo. October 19 is the Hispanic Heritage Luncheon. The first marking period ends on October 25, which is also early release. The Red Ribbon Assembly is on October 29. Fall interim exams run from October 29 to November 9. Scoliosis screening is on October 30. October 31 marks the Fall Social and Twins Day. Picture days are November 1 and 2. November 6 is a teacher planning day.

Open Forum: Mrs. Robledo asked if we can determine tentative dates for future meetings; November 13 was suggested for the next meeting. Mr. Viscito asked about health/clinic forms, which were not included in the opening of school packet. Mrs. Stroleny said we will look into it. She said the clinic is important in keeping kids in school; often students are able to return to class after spending time in the clinic. Mr. Viscito asked about class size, and Mrs. Stroleny said that it has been challenging to construct classes of 22 students. Mrs. Coto-Gonzalez said we have five sections over the limit by one student each in the entire school. Mrs. Robledo welcomed Mrs. Coto-Gonzalez to the EESAC; she introduced herself, adding that she has spent the last 13 years at Sunset Senior High. Mr. Cardenas asked about the cafeterias’ abilities to deal with health emergencies. Mrs. Stroleny said we are prepared and trained to deal with emergency situations. Mrs. Daniels commented that lunches have been adjusted for health reasons. Mrs. Baker said that the class of 1957 had its 55-year reunion in July and toured the school. Twelve members attended and they were elated. Mr. Sands said they will be invited again to the Alumni Day in February. The PTSA is reinstalling the Frankie Rolle sign on the gym, said Mrs. Stroleny. Mrs. Fernandez said the Middle Math Bonanza will take place on November 3 at Ferguson High School. She said invitations of the top math students in each grade level are being made to select the team. Mrs. Daniels said the first cross country meet is on Wednesday at Larry and Penny Thompson Park; Soccer begins on Thursday. Mr. Sands said the United Way campaign runs from September 21 to October 1. Mrs. Robledo said she spent a week in Washington, D.C., to meet with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. She said the Caucus seemed to be a receptive audience.
