Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of minutes: Mrs. Robledo called the meeting to order at 8:20 a.m. The minutes from January 22, 2013, were reviewed and approved.

SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Plan (SIP). Mr. Rivers gave the SIP review. According to the Reading 2012 FCAT 2.0 the WHITE, BLACK, HISPANIC, and SWD subgroups did not make satisfactory progress towards their AMOs.
6TH GRADE: Students in the WHITE subgroup demonstrated an increase of 18 student achievement percentage points when comparing the District Winter Interim Assessment to the Baseline Assessment; students in the BLACK subgroup demonstrated an increase of 23 student achievement percentage points when comparing the District Winter Interim Assessment to the Baseline Assessment; students in the HISPANIC subgroup demonstrated an increase of 23 student achievement percentage points when comparing the District Winter Interim Assessment to the Baseline Assessment; students in the SWD subgroup demonstrated an increase 63 student achievement percentage points when comparing the District Winter Interim Assessment to the Baseline Assessment.
7TH GRADE: Students in the WHITE subgroup demonstrated an increase of 2 student achievement percentage points when comparing the District Winter Interim Assessment to the Baseline Assessment; students in the BLACK subgroup demonstrated a decrease of 6 student achievement percentage points when comparing the District Winter Interim Assessment to the Baseline Assessment; students in the HISPANIC subgroup demonstrated a decrease of 2 student achievement percentage points when comparing the District Winter Interim Assessment to the Baseline Assessment; students in the SWD subgroup demonstrated a decrease of 33 student achievement percentage points when comparing the District Winter Interim Assessment to the Baseline Assessment.
8TH GRADE: Students in the WHITE subgroup demonstrated an increase of 23 student achievement percentage points when comparing the District Winter Interim Assessment to the Baseline Assessment; students in the BLACK subgroup demonstrated an increase of 12 student achievement percentage points when comparing the District Winter Interim Assessment to the Baseline Assessment; students in the HISPANIC subgroup demonstrated an increase of 21 student achievement percentage points when comparing the District Winter Interim Assessment to the Baseline Assessment; students in the SWD subgroup demonstrated no change (remained 100%) in student achievement percentage points when comparing the District Winter Interim Assessment to the Baseline Assessment.

The areas of concern are Informational Text/Research Process and Literary Analysis Fiction/Nonfiction.

According to the Mathematics 2012 FCAT 2.0 the BLACK and SWD subgroups did not make satisfactory progress towards their AMOs.
6TH GRADE: Students in the BLACK subgroup demonstrated an increase of 23 student achievement percentage points when comparing the District Winter Interim Assessment to the Baseline Assessment; students in the SWD subgroup demonstrated an increase 47 student achievement percentage points when comparing the District Winter Interim Assessment to the Baseline Assessment.
7TH GRADE: Students in the BLACK subgroup demonstrated an increase of 25 student achievement percentage points when comparing the District Winter Interim Assessment to the Baseline Assessment; students in the SWD subgroup demonstrated an increase of 67 student achievement percentage points when comparing the District Winter Interim Assessment to the Baseline Assessment.

According to the Algebra 1 EOC results (administered during the 2011-2012 school year), the BLACK and SWD subgroups did not make satisfactory progress. Data gathered from 2012-2013 District Baseline and Winter Interim Assessments indicate the following:
Students in the BLACK subgroup demonstrated an increase of 6 student achievement percentage points when comparing the District Winter Interim Assessment to the Baseline Assessment; students in the SWD subgroup demonstrated an increase of 100 student achievement percentage points when comparing the District Winter Interim Assessment to the Baseline Assessment.

Mr. Rivers added that whatever our reading and math teachers are doing it is working because we are seeing great improvement. The EESAC voted to approve the SIP mid-year report. Mrs. Stroleny commented that we have seen great gains, especially in subgroups that we are targeting. Information from the literacy team is being disseminated through departments. All data is analyzed at the literacy team meetings. Various departments are working with language arts and pairing strategies school-wide to raise school literacy. We have indentified certain students that we believe need additional support. Strong professional development is occurring at the literacy team meetings, as well as at early release sessions, which have been addressing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The faculty is becoming very knowledgeable about the CCSS. Mr. Rivers also informed the EESAC about the iCare initiative involving the Miami-Dade Community College Kendall Campus. The school district is working on how to make our business a better business. This includes courtesy, respect, responsiveness, and the overall environment.

Principal’s Message: Mrs. Stroleny said Carver held an information session for electives on February 11; Sunset fifth-graders and our sixth- and seventh-graders met with elective teachers and students currently in those electives. We are working to increase enrollment in these elective classes. Physical Education has high enrollment, but we want to make sure other elective classes are well represented. Mrs. Daniels added that PE is taking sixth- and seventh-graders to visit art, music and technology classrooms to show them those programs; we want students to get their first choice elective. Information on the iPrep Math program also was given at the session. Mrs. Stroleny gave the following upcoming dates: Early release is on Thursday, and Mrs. Vinat and Mrs. Groeninger are presenting from the Social Studies department. The Valentine’s Day Social is on February 15, along with the Black History Luncheon. On February 19, randomly selected eighth-graders will take the NAEP exam; UTD elections will also take place. Subject selection begins next week. On February 20, German and French students will take a pilot AP exam and there will be a faculty meeting to prepare for the FCAT Writing assessment on February 26, vote on the waiver for block scheduling, and inform the faculty about iCare. Interim progress reports go home on February 20. On February 21, hearing screening will take place for 6th grade students along with a Palmetto High School articulation meeting for 8th grade students. Mock trials begin on February 25. February 22 is Carver Alumni Day. Mr. Sands said he expects about 300 former students from when Carver was a high school. We also will honor the sixth inductee to the Hall of Fame, Mrs. Eloise Jennings, a former teacher. A German competition will take place on March 6. The book fair is the week of March 11. Mrs. Fernandez said that on March 15 the Math counts team will compete at the state level; last week the team won third place at a competition.

Official Business: The EESAC voted in favor of Carver remaining a uniform school.

Open Forum: Mr. Viscito asked about the EOC exams and FCAT math. Mr. Rivers explained that EOC scores will be factored into the school performance score and that students in a course with an EOC exam do not take the FCAT in that subject. Mrs. Daniels said that the girls’ track and field team won first place at a meet last Saturday. The district qualifying meet is February 20. Basketball, golf and tennis seasons are approaching. Mrs. Robledo asked for the support of the Frontline group in the upcoming UTD elections.
