The meeting was called to order at 8:11 a.m. by Sandra Ames in the Media Center of Dorothy M. Wallace COPE Center.
Present were: Sandra Ames, Annette Burks-Grice, Sarah Russell, Dr. Sandra Billingslea, Patricia Florit-Valenzano, Alfreida Joseph-Goins, Dr. Yvonne Parchment, Shirley Herndon, Sylvia Hadley, Sheree Cooper, Constance Gilbert, and Kimberly Wilson.
Mrs. Ames, EESAC Chair, welcomed everyone back for the new school year and introduced Shirley Herndon.
The minutes from the June 7, 2013 EESAC meeting were reviewed. After review, the minutes were approved with changes.
Old Business:
School Improvement Plan – Reading - Mrs. Goins provided update to the 2013-2014 School
Improvement Plan (SIP). Data overview for Reading for last year – the FCAT scores are moving in the right direction for the 9th and 10th graders. They went from 14% to 17% proficiency. This year we want to increase more. Currently there is no specific data comparison available for Writing. A decrease in Writing proficiency was shown. A writing plan will be developed to increase student proficiency. Now we’re in the diagnostic/testing mode for this week and the month of September. By the next EESAC meeting we will have raw data available.
School Improvement Plan – Math & Science - Mrs. Valenzano informed attendees that based on the middle school baseline not much improvement was seen in Math and Science. In Science, based on the baseline, we saw an incline in the scores. The high school students were improving. In Biology there was a 12% passing rate in the End of Course (EOC) testing for 10th graders and a 38% passing rate for the 11th graders.
Mrs. Grice stated that the implementation of Common Core Standards is a must – we cannot just prepare students for FCAT assessment.
New Business:
Mrs. Grice introduced the newly adopted Code of Student Conduct. She shared that each school is required to send in their Alternate Plan for Outdoor Suspension. Copies of COPE South’s Alternate Plan for Outdoor Suspension will be shared at the next EESAC meeting.
Ms. Herndon (from Sunstate Bank) asked if students can’t have work detail instead of outdoor suspension. A discussion was held about why that would not be practical for the students here at COPE South. Her suggestion was appreciated by the staff.
Mrs. Ames said elections for new members (specifically, teachers and a chairperson) to the EESAC will be held at the next EESAC meeting. In the EESAC bylaws the first meeting in September is when meeting dates and times are selected for the upcoming school year.
The committee was informed that the first draft of the SIP is due on September 3, 2013 and the final draft is due by October 7, 2013.
