Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of minutes: Mrs. Robledo called the meeting to order at 8:25 a.m. The minutes from December 1, 2016, were reviewed and approved.

SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Plan (SIP). Mr. Rivers said the Attendance Boundary Committee has notified schools of boundary changes, but Carver will not be affected. Three schools from the Central Region are impacted. He also said we have been notified that our EESAC is in compliance with all documents. Mr. Rivers informed the EESAC that on September 22, 2015, the faculty voted on the use of the A+ Florida Recognition funds; the faculty approved (44:2) to use the same formula that has been successfully used in the past. EESAC supports the faculty vote and approved the use of the past Florida School Recognition Plan.

Principal’s Message: Mrs. Stroleny welcomed all to a new year. She thanked all for their support at the end of the year, especially the last two days of school. Circumstances forced schools to alter their plans on Dec. 17 and administration and staff helped ensure a productive day of learning. The seventh-grade activity, Kick-It-Up, had to be postponed to Jan. 22. We had excellent attendance, and teaching and learning was taking place in every class, even on the last day. Kings Day Celebrations are taking place this week in some of the humanities and language classes if it is relevant to their specific culture. Clubs will meet on Jan. 8 and 29. The Literacy Team meets on Jan. 11 for department chairpersons and anyone interested. The general PTSA meeting is on Jan. 14. On Jan. 15, seventh-graders will take a fieldtrip to Dave and Busters. There is no school on Jan. 18 for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The grading period ends on Jan. 22, and Jan. 25 is a teacher planning day. Mid-year assessments for science, biology, U.S. History and Civics begin on Jan. 26, and Ms. Castillo is making the testing schedule.
The next EESAC meeting and Mrs. Noa’s Talent Show are on Feb. 2. Dr. Garcia could not attend today’s meeting, but he said the process for the STEM designation is progressing and he is collecting data from department chairpersons; all departments are current with their documentation.

Open Forum: Mrs. Robledo said more than 300 individuals attended the fieldtrip to Islands of Adventure. She called it “an amazing experience” and said all students displayed good behavior and parents also cooperated well. Mrs. Murphy commented that it was her first such event as a chaperone and said the “kids loved it and their independence.” Mr. Delgado, Mrs. Peralta, Mrs. Agudelo, Mr. Hudson and Mrs. Daniels also chaperoned. Mrs. Stroleny commended the work and planning it took for this endeavor. Mr. Toll said all students liked the fieldtrip and he commended the work of the chaperones. He added that seventh-graders were disappointed that Kick-It-Up was postponed but that they understood the reasoning behind it. On Dec. 20, 160 students and parents from Carver attended the Miami Heat game as a fundraiser event. Mrs. Arguello said it was a very successful activity. Mrs. Daniels said that starting this Saturday we will have track meets each Saturday for more than a month. The boys’ volleyball team was county runner-up. Mrs. Toledo said she has a team of students participating in the Internet Science and Technology Fair with the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Central Florida. These students are consulting with scientists and climatologists as part of the competition. Mr. Hudson said the school Spelling Bee will take place during first period on Jan. 13 and 14. Forty-five students qualified through competitions in their language arts classes, and the overall winner will represent Carver at the Miami Herald Spelling Bee on March 8. Mr. Apollon asked for an explanation as to why Carver and Miami-Dade middle schools do not compete athletically with private schools. Mr. Sejeck said the county’s middle school athletics program is the largest in the nation and is financially supported by the school district. He also said public middle schools are able to verify grades and eligibility. Some cross country meets invite private schools. The FHSAA oversees high school athletics and this competition is regulated differently.
