Topics Covered

The meeting was called to order at 2:57 p.m.; and all were welcomed by the Vice–Chair, Marjory Saravia.

Quorum was established.

The minutes of the previous meeting were reviewed and accepted.

Ms. Sears reported on the School Improvement Plan.
• English and Math are going to be tested. US History will be tested the last two days in January.
• Tutoring will begin after results of interim exams. Tutoring will be held on Saturday morning. Ms. Raquel Hernandez suggested that tutoring should be from 10:00-12:00 pm after a survey she did with her classes on Saturday tutoring. This would allow for more Saturday tutoring.
• Mr. Moffi suggested that tutoring should be offered for students taking AP exams.

Ms. Sears gave the following recruitment update:
• We have 488 applications submitted for prospective MLEC students. Last year, we had received 346 by this time.
• Recruitment Open House events—on the evening of Wednesday, November 18, 2015 the open house was really organized and parents really enjoyed the open house.
• On Monday December 7 promotion will begin for upcoming open house December 12, 2015
o will be distributed via email blast, promotional banners at selected middle schools, flyers distribution, social media hash tags and sending connect Eds.
o Our aim is to emphasize the facilities in our campus.
• Mr. DePriest suggested for PTA to sell carnival style food (popcorn, snow cone, etc.) for upcoming open house.
• Students will be able to complete application on same day as open house.


Open Discussion:
• Dr. Carter-Remy shared exciting news: MLEC Post-Secondary school will be offering 3 new programs: Culinary Arts in the evening, Business Administration, and Child Care (45 hours and CDA). Registration is now open!
• Ms. Saravia mentioned that MDC will have its annual Children’s Holiday at North Campus on December 12, 2015. High schools will be able to participate in the Anima tent. Students will be allowed to dress up and participate in activities on December 12, 2015.

New Business:
• Ms. Diaz attended a School Board Meeting on December 2, 2015.
o The scale system has changed 600 points maximum. MDCPS is concerned.
o Changing grading scales for all of MDCPS will result in reductions in A schools district wide.
o The learning gains category has changed completely and will no longer give out a large number of points.
o A majority of teachers is concerned about test format and testing information.
