Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of Previous Minutes: Ingrid Robledo, chairwoman, called the EESAC meeting to order at 8:17 a.m. The February 9th, 2004 minutes were reviewed. The minutes were approved by consensus.

School Performance Excellence Plan (SPEP) Update:
Mrs. Gonzalez gave the SPEP update. She mentioned that the mid-year review, at the ACCESS Center 4, was highly successful. Carver met all mid-year goals. The Writing objective has been completed with a post-test. In the pre-test the mean FCAT Writing score was 3.286. In the post-test the mean score was 4.231. The objective required students to increase their scores by one half point. This objective was met; expectations were exceeded.

Almost all of the departments have completed or implemented their School Performance Excellence Plan strategies. The Mathematics Department is working on their last strategy. Today the Mathematics Department is meeting with Ms. Behar, PTSA President, to complete Objective 4, Strategy 3. The strategy, involving the PTSA, involves conducting a survey; collecting and analyzing data; and interpreting results through 6th grade mathematics classes. The topic is sale and profitability of school snacks. Ms. Harmon (Music) and Ms. Gramling (Gifted) are working on their data collection projects, using technology, now. In May the foreign language oral proficiency tests as well as the science data analysis test must be given. The Reading objective will be measured by the FCAT.

Principal's Report:
Next year we will incorporate quarterly checks to ensure that we are meeting our goals.

Magnet recruitment has come to a close. All eligible applicants have been entered into the random selection. Presently, we are waiting for the outcome of the lottery.

FCAT testing has gone very smoothly in all areas. It is important to do well on the NRT also. Mrs. Gonzalez thanked the PTSA for providing snacks to the students and mentioned that they were greatly appreciated -excellent choices.

Recommendations for next year:
Next year we will incorporate quarterly assessments to ensure that we are meeting our goals.

Mr. Sands proposed to incorporate the Presidential election into next year's SPEP.

Mrs. Smulewicz was asked to be chairperson for next year's SPEP.

Mrs. Gonzalez wants a mathematics objective incorporated into next year's SPEP.

Thanks and Congratulations:
Mr. Sands thanked the PTSA for all their work on the Valentine's Day dances.

Mrs. Prahl was congratulated for the PTSA work on the snacks. Mrs. Femandez mentioned that water was a great choice. Mr. Lenard was also thanked for his cooperation.

Magnet Recruitment:
January 31, 2004 was the deadline for magnet recruitment. We received a tremendous amount of applications. The selection is pending.

Letters will be sent to 7th grade parents explaining that Coral Reef IS/IB program is not an automatic track. Parents need to know that their children must meet criteria to be admitted into the program. Seventh graders will be reminded that the 7th grade year counts. It was mentioned that Carver's IE program is not a pre-IB. Ms. Castillo has invited various magnet schools all of which have different criteria.

Mrs. Robledo advised that some new EESAC parent members would have to be elected for next year's EESAC because the current 8th grade parents will no longer be at Carver next year. She mentioned that Gloria Infante, Annie Behar, John Dubey, and Frank Stringfellow are staying as member of EESAC.

Announcements:
David Douriez mentioned that some students already know about Coral Reef acceptance. Other students are waiting for the results of the random selection.

Ms. Daniels mentioned that the Girls Basketball team did very well; the team has earned 14 medals so far. Ms. Daniels thanked Mrs. Gonzalez and the staff members for their support. Mrs. Gonzalez thanked all the staff members who supported the team at Miami Springs Senior High. It was announced that the Tennis team won the Youth Fair tournament and that the semifinals are coming up.

Literacy Contents: German students will participate in the German State competition in Daytona. The Spanish Department is preparing for the Mini-Concurso, the district-wide competition.

Mrs. Gonzalez is working with a parent and Mrs. Salman to develop a professional eight-minute film video -"What Carver is all about."

Mrs. Gramling mentioned that Carver is participating in the Odyssey of the Mind this Saturday. Carver has entered in 4 problems with 5 teams.

Mr. Sands congratulated Mrs. Salman. He mentioned that she was very effective and asked to please, support Career Day.

Mrs. Gonzalez mentioned the SECME competition at Barbara Goleman Senior High on March 20th.

Blue Ribbon Award: Mrs. Gonzalez mentioned that Carver was among the finalists for the Blue Ribbon Award. Carver passed the first phase of the process in which the school competed with other 1200 applicants. Presently the school is competing with 300 finalists in the second phase of the process; they might visit us. She also mentioned that Mrs. Stroleny, Mrs. Senior, Mrs. Miyares, Mrs. Gramling, and Mrs. Goldstein were very instrumental in the application process.

Carver has been recognized by Magnet Schools of America. Ms. Sanchez and Mrs. Femandez were very instrumental in submitting the application packet.

Mrs. Robledo pointed out that Mrs. Gonzalez is always very supportive.
