Approval of minutes: Mrs. Robledo called the meeting to order at 8:15 a.m. The minutes from December 6, 2016, were reviewed and approved.

SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Plan (SIP). Mr. Rivers began by sharing the latest information regarding the Attendance Boundary Committee (ABC) Notification of Final Targeted Schools. We are 100 percent magnet and therefore not affected. He said the faculty voted to retain the same formula for the distribution of funds from the Florida School Recognition program. EESAC supports the faculty vote and approved the use of the past formula/plan; the financial award will be for nonrecurring bonuses to the faculty and staff. The 2016-2017 SIP was reviewed based on the guidelines prescribed in briefing 20557 – 2016-2017 School Improvement Plan Mid-Year Reflection). Mr. Rivers presented i-Ready data, comparing i-Ready Diagnostic Assessment 1 & 2. The mathematics data is as follows:

The data, for mathematics and reading, reflects that the number of students scoring below level decreased in all grades from assessment 1 to assessment 2.

Principal’s Message: Mrs. Stroleny welcomed all members back and wished them a “Happy New Year!” The 2016 year closed quietly and smoothly. December highlights included MDCPS School Board recognition for our Silver Stem designation, Label designation, and Five Star award. The seventh-grade Shakespeare showcase on Dec. 21 was a wonderful success. The seventh-grade Kick-It-Up was changed to Spike-It-Up due to inclement weather on Dec. 23. Jan. 10 is the Sports Grill Family Night fundraiser. The final school tour for parents of prospective incoming students is Jan. 11. The magnet application period ends on Jan. 15. Mrs. Stroleny explained that the tours are informational for parents unfamiliar with the school. There is no school on Jan. 16 due to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. On Jan. 17, a team of administrators from West Palm Beach will visit Carver. A German student group will visit on Jan. 18. The second marking period ends on Jan. 20; Hoop-It-Up takes place for eighth-graders.
Jan. 23 is a teacher planning day and marks the beginning of the window for midyear assessment for eighth-grade science, Biology, and Civics. The Spelling Bee organized by Mr. Hudson is on Jan. 24. The District Teacher of the Year dinner is on Jan. 26; Mr. Hudson is Carver’s honoree. On Jan. 27, author Debbie Reed Fischer will visit Carver, and eighth-graders will take a field trip to Island of Adventure. Feb. 2 is Take Our Daughters and Son to Work Day. The PTSA general meeting is Feb. 6. The next EESAC meeting is Feb. 7.

Official Business: The Council voted to retain the same distribution formula for the Florida School Recognition Program whereby the staff will receive bonuses because the school received an A grade from the state for the 2015-16 school year.

Open Forum: Mrs. Daniels reported on athletics. We are starting track and field season with meets every Saturday for the next six weeks. The Kids Run Miami program is underway whereby students run the last 1.2 miles of the Miami Marathon on Jan. 29. The activity requires a waiver and running log, which students are completing in their physical education classes. Mr. Lopez inquired about who can participate, and Mrs. Daniels explained that it is open to all students and gives a “good sense of accomplishment.” Mrs. Robledo said preparations are ongoing for the eighth-grade field trip to Islands of Adventure on Jan. 27 and that parent chaperones may be needed.
