The meeting was called to order at 8:06 a.m. by Mrs. Alfreida Joseph-Goins in Room 39 of Dorothy M. Wallace COPE Center.
In Attendance: Alfreida Joseph-Goins, Annette Burks-Grice, Marilyn Morning, Dr. Angela Gayden, Sarah Russell, Sonya Harrington, Constance Gilbert, Dr. Yvonne Parchment, and Mildreca Robinson.
The Chair welcomed everyone to the second meeting of the school year.
Minutes from the October 18, 2016 meeting were read silently by those present and later a motion to accept the minutes with corrections was made by Ms. Gilbert and seconded by Dr. Gayden.
Mrs. Goins reviewed the School Improvement Plan midyear assessments.
Goal #1 – The school-wide goal for 2016-2017 school year is to increase student achievement by improving core instruction in all content areas.
Goal #2 – The goal for the 2016-2017 school year for the Early Warning Sign Indicators (EWS) is to increase overall school attendance and to reduce the number of truant students.
The Principal (Mrs. Grice) asked the core content teachers to present their data.
Dr. Gayden (Science/Biology) – The science goal was to reach the AMO of 36% of students passing the Biology EOC by using Edgenuity, Scientific Argumentation, and Inquiry Labs to increase student scores. The 8th grade student scores increased from 20% to 32% overall. In Biology four of the 17 students tested reached proficiency; one student reached limited proficiency.
Dr. Gayden explained what she is doing with the students – she is incorporating more Edgenuity use in the classroom, she is having students work on individual projects, she is doing labs using scientific rules and laws to justify results, and she is having students read “ReadWorks.org” to help with science tests. She is also using Quizzes.com.
Mrs. Goins presented the Mathematics midyear data. The math goal was to aide students to make learning gains by using Edgenuity and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt math programs. In Algebra 1 (9th grade) 6 students were tested and zero students were proficient. In Geometry 10 students were tested and zero students were proficient. Students must show learning gains going from Algebra 1 to Geometry. In Algebra 2 ten students were tested and zero students were proficient. Geometry students in Algebra 2 will count towards our learning gains. Currently our students are not near the required 70% proficiency – they are in the 20 – 30% range.
Mrs. Goins presented the Midyear Reading data. In grade 10 nine students were tested, zero were proficient. Three students are close to being proficient. In grade 9 seven students were tested, zero were proficient. Some of our students are several grades behind where they should be. Poor attendance is the main setback.
Mrs. Robinson provided additional information regarding reading from other data sources. Data sources are based on Reading Plus (9th – 12th grades) and i-Ready (6th – 8th grades), on student midyear assessments on grade level, and on reading programs done weekly.
Mrs. Goins presented the U.S. History midyear status. Fourteen students were tested. Zero were proficient. We need to do interventions since no students are near proficiency in this area.
In Civics, one student was tested but was not proficient.
Mrs. Grice stated that student attendance continues to be an obstacle.
Mrs. Goins scheduled an additional EESAC meeting in order to vote on the required items – the SIP Waivers, School Uniforms and to discuss EESAC fund expenditures.
The next meeting will be held Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. in Room 39.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 a.m.
