Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of Previous Minutes: Ingrid Robledo, Chairwoman, called the EESAC meeting to order at 8:15 a.m. Mrs. Robledo asked Shelley Stroleny to conduct the meeting due to her sore throat. The March EESAC minutes were reviewed. The necessary corrections were made and the minutes were approved.

School Performance Excellence Plan (S.P.E.P.) Update: The S.P.E.P. update was given by Mrs. Gonzalez. All departments have completed their S.P.E.P. strategies and almost all documentation has been submitted to Mrs. Stroleny. The departments will continue to work towards the S.P.E.P. strategies since they are year-long teaching strategies. An April 28th faculty meeting will determine the 2004 – 2005 S.P.E.P. writing committee, which will be in charge of determining the S.P.E.P. goals for next year. Mrs. Gonzalez hopes to have an “edited draft” by the beginning of next year. Carver is currently awaiting the May F.C.A.T. results.

Principal’s Report: The Principal’s Report was given by Mrs. Gonzalez. Spanish, French, and German students are participating in a city-wide language competition on April 17th. German students will be going to Daytona for a state competition on April 22nd. Students will be participating in the Geography Bee on April 16th and the History Bee on April 30th. She urged everyone interested to attend the different competitions and bees. The 6th graders will take a field trip the Kennedy Space Center on May 7th. The S.R.I. examination will be given on April 27th to determine each student’s reading level. Practice A.P. French and German tests have been administered. The practice A.P. Spanish test will be administered on April 23rd. The actual French A.P. examination will be on May 3rd. The actual Spanish A.P. examination will be on May 4th. The actual German A.P. examination will be on May 6th. Carver has a very high passing rate of I.S. students passing the A.P. tests. The high cost of the administration of A.P. tests is offset by the A.P. money that Carver receives for passing scores each year. Career Day, organized by Carmen Salman, will be on April 16th. Guest speakers will be speaking in every 1st period class and every homeroom class. There will be a breakfast for the presenters and student guides. The Etiquette class for 8th grade students and their parents will be on April 20th and April 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Parents will be invited to attend the presentations. Subject selection for the incoming 6th graders from Sunset Elementary, Coral Way Elementary, and Carver Elementary will be held on April 20th. Students will be given an orientation and complete the subject selection forms. New I.E. student Subject Selection has been completed. Half-day field trips have been set up for the incoming students on May 12th and May 13th. A general P.T.S.A. meeting will be held on April 22nd at 7:00 p.m. to choose next year’s E.E.S.A.C. representatives. The annual Friends of Carver banquet will be held at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club on April 30th at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Gonzalez invited all teachers and parent to attend. Mrs. Gonzalez stated that to reduce class size for the 2004 – 2005 school year additional personnel would be hired and three additional classrooms added by converting the now existing computer labs and a teacher workroom in the new building. Three mobile computer labs will be purchased so that Carver can continue to reach its technology goals despite the loss of the computer labs. Lab activities will be done in the teacher’s classroom. Two more mobile, computer labs will be ordered next year. Science classes will be given room priority due to the high quantity of lab materials and activities. High room priority will be given to teachers who have five or six classes to prepare for. Olga Miyares will continue to be Carver’s computer teacher to help subject area teachers infuse the technology into their lessons. Mrs. Gonzalez will be accepting a Magnet School of America Award for Carver at the School Board meeting on April 14th.

Announcements: Mr. Scippio announced that the African American club will be visiting the historic campus of Florida Memorial College in Opalocka. Mr. Dubey announced that College Night at M.A.S.T. Academy will be hosting 43 universities ranging from Harvard to the University of Miami to Weslyan College and others that have never recruited in Miami before. Invitations to College Night were sent to all middle school and high school students from both public and private schools to encourage early thought and preparation for college. The early start of the 2004 – 2005 school year will influence the activities scheduled for P.E. Annette Daniels announced. Although Carver is the only middle school with an air-conditioned gymnasium, administrators and teachers will have to be cautious when conducting outside activities in the August heat. Mrs. Daniels said that the P.E. activities will be inside activities when possible. Katrina Avila announced that a Salute to Education breakfast would be held on April 15th at the Biltmore Hotel. Carver is being recognized this month and Katrina Avila, Gabriela Fernandez, and Bibi Moghani will be representing Carver. Tom Sands announced the Holocaust read-in. He also said that the re-enactment of the Mock Oral Arguments had been postponed from April 14th to the last week of April. Mrs. Gonzalez announced that the school video is under way.
