The meeting was called to order at 9:06 a.m. by Mrs. Alfreida Joseph-Goins in Room 39 of Dorothy M. Wallace COPE Center.
In Attendance: Alfreida Joseph-Goins, Dr. Yvonne Parchment, Sarah Russell, Sonya Harrington, Mery Dominguez, Annette Burks-Grice, Dr. Calvina Clay, Thalia Navarro, Mildreca Robinson, Dr. Tarika Quinn, Constance Gilbert, Marilyn Morning, Dr. Angela Gayden, and Joey McCall.
Mrs. Goins welcomed members and introduced Mery Dominguez (who operates a non-profit business – “Academy of Class”) as one of our new community partners and Thalia Navarro as our student member.
The minutes from the May 16, 2017 meeting were read and approved with corrections.
There was no Old Business.
New Business:
The 2017-2018 School Improvement Plan and the 2017 School Rating was reviewed and discussed by Mrs. Grice. The discussion provided members an explanation of the Alternative School Rating Rubric and how the ratings are determined based on learning gains.
Further information was given on how learning gains affect the school’s rating. Members were provided the following data: 39% learning gain in Reading, 26% learning gains in Mathematics. Learning gains in both Reading and Mathematics = 65%. 65/2 = 32.5 (33%). The 33% placed the school in the Maintaining category which is 46% - 26%.
Mrs. Grice shared that our focus for 2017-2018 will continue to be improving academics and student achievement. The goal is to build instructional capacity in an effort to address all learning styles.
Mrs. Goins made it known that the school will work tirelessly to improve the school’s rating to Commendable. School Improvement strategies will be modified to meet this goal. One necessity was progress monitoring in both Reading and Mathematics. We continue to struggle in Mathematics.
Mrs. Goins also informed members of the need to maintain attendance – our attendance goal was commendable at 92%. The school must test 80% of students to receive a rating of Maintaining. Therefore, FTE is critical.
Mrs. Mery Dominguez asked if students must be tested at the same school since our population is transient. Mrs. Goins explained that students only needed to be enrolled and in attendance for one FTE cycle.
Mrs. Goins emphasized that the number one priority was to inform EESAC members of our School Improvement goals and initiatives so that we work as a team to meet our goal to move from Maintaining to Commendable.
Members were informed that once the School Improvement Plan is updated everyone will be provided a copy.
Mrs. Goins asked if the meeting time of 8:00 a.m. was acceptable to everyone. All agreed that it was.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:40 a.m.
