Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of minutes: Mrs. Robledo called the meeting to order at 8:20 a.m. The minutes from December 5, 2017, were reviewed and approved.

SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Plan (SIP). Mr. Rivers reported that iReady (AP2) testing ended on Dec. 22. In Reading, grades 6 and 7 showed improvement in the Overall Reading Level from the previous diagnostic assessment. He noted that seventh grade showed impressive gains Vocabulary – 20 percent of the students were below level on AP1, 12 percent of the students were below level on AP2. Grade 8 had a slight regression from 11 percent below grade level to 13 percent on the midyear assessment. Comprehension: Literature was the lowest domain in grade 8. The Overall Math Level for grade 6 indicates significant gains – 20 percent of students below level on AP1, 11 percent of students below level on AP2. Data for grades 7 and 8 cannot be accurately compared because students enrolled in Algebra or Geometry were not required to take the iReady AP2; they were assessed using the Algebra and Geometry midyear exam.

Principal’s Message: Mrs. Stroleny welcomed all back from the holiday break. She discussed various recent and upcoming events. On Jan. 8-9, I-Prep will hold an in-house robotics field trip.
On Jan. 12, IS/IE Spanish students are taking a field trip to St. Augustine. On Jan. 19, eighth-graders are taking a field trip to Islands of Adventure; that day was originally a planning day but is now a regular school day with a modified schedule. Mr. Garcia asked if parents can pick up their students from the theme park and was told that this is not permitted. The final parent tour is on Jan. 10; the deadline for magnet applications is Jan. 15 and applications are submitted electronically. Last year we had 1,600 applicants for 350 places. Many students must take language exams for admission. Mrs. Stroleny said we are trying to grow the Italian program. The third marking period begins on Jan. 22. The Literacy Team meets on Jan. 22 and the focus of that meeting will be helping non-Language Arts teachers to reinforce literacy skills taught in Language Arts classes. The PTSA general meeting is on Jan. 26. On Jan. 26, seventh-graders will take a field trip to Dave and Busters. The Shakespeare Showcase is on Jan. 31. Feb. 2 is Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day. Mrs. Stroleny reviewed the testing calendar. Mid-year assessments in Science, Biology, Civics, and United States History take place Jan. 22-Feb. 16. NAEP testing for eighth-grade is on Feb. 15. English-language learners will take the ACCESS assessment between Jan 29-March 23. The FSA Writing assessment is March 1-9. FITNESSGRAM testing is April 2-30. FSA, EOC and AP testing runs from April 16 to May 18. The next EESAC meeting is on Feb. 6.

Open Forum: Mrs. Daniels reported that track and field season starts Jan. 13. Girls’ flag football starts later this month and golf and basketball are upcoming. Mr. Garcia asked how tryouts are publicized. Mrs. Daniels said the tryouts are publicized in various ways including announcements. Mrs. Stroleny added that they are also publicized through the Remind program. Mrs. Daniels said a group of students will participate in the Kids ‘Run on Jan. 28 as part of the Miami Marathon. Dr. Garcia said bowling season is upcoming. He also said that the Museum of Science is donating some STEM items to the science department. He said the STEAM designation visited Carver in December and we received a favorable score and are currently working to upload materials. He also said science students are participating at the Science Fair on March 10. Mrs. Robledo said that she and Mrs. Winston are training Advanced Placement teachers and students in March.
