Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of minutes: Mrs. Robledo called the meeting to order at 8:20 a.m. The minutes from Sept. 4, 2018, were reviewed and approved.

SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Plan (SIP). We are implementing ongoing infusion of social and emotional strategies and activities to help students feel more connected and enjoy their middle school experience more, thereby raising student achievement patterns. We also have increased communication, mentoring, and fun activities that are inclusive, such as Start with Hello, snow cone days, and socials.

Official Business: Mr. Rivers presented a needs analysis by grade report for Mathematics and Reading (i-Ready Diagnostic – AP1): Grade 6 overall math level indicates that 21% of the students are below grade level; Grade 7 overall math level indicates that 24% of the students are below grade level; Grade 8 overall math level indicates that 27% of the students are below grade level. Grade 6 overall reading level indicates that 23% of the students are below grade level; Grade 7 overall reading level indicates that 18% of the students are below grade level; Grade 8 overall reading level indicates that 12% of the students are below grade level.

Principal’s Message: Mr. Rivers gave the principal’s message. Mrs. Stroleny expressed her regrets of not being at the meeting as she is with the French Educational Attaché at ISPA with the other principals of International Studies French programs to plan our year’s French program. She has been notified by FIPA that our French intern should be arriving this month. In the past this has had a positive experience for our students. More than 900 parents attended Open House on Sept. 12. Author Peter Lerangis visited with language arts students on Sept. 13 and 14. The event, partially sponsored by PTSA, was a huge success. Take Your Dad to School Day on Sept. 26 was well attended as more than 50 dads came and had coffee with the Student Services department. Mrs. Stroleny thanked Mrs. Castro and Mrs. Garces for their work with this event. We have been selected as a National Blue Ribbon School. Mrs. Stroleny thanked Mr. Hudson for his work in completing the application. Mrs. Stroleny will go to Washington, D.C. to accept this honor. Mrs. Stroleny thanked our students, staff, faculty, and parents for their work in making Carver so successful. Andrea Martinez was honored by Magnet Schools of America for designing a poster and will be awarded a Target gift certificate. Mr. Luis Sarmiento, PTSA Treasurer, arranged to lift and trim trees at the parent pick-up and drop-off areas. This job was completed on. Sept. 29 and increased visibility and safety. The safety gate in front of the school is in the process of being installed.

Mr. Rivers presented the calendar of upcoming events. On Oct. 2, seventh-graders are attending the Kitty Hawk field trip, which is a STEAM activity. Student and staff ID's have arrived and will be distributed this week. Students must wear them daily. Mrs. Basso has organized a magnet tour on Oct. 3. Oct. 5 Hispanic Heritage Luncheon. Oct. 5 is flu vaccine make-up day. GIPA Oktoberfest is on Oct. 6 at the German American Club. The Scholastic Book Fair and BMI screenings for sixth-graders are Oct. 8-12. Oct. 12 is a snow-cone day fundraiser for seventh-graders. Oct. 15 is picture-day retakes. The Literacy Team meets on Oct. 15 to discuss data and building literacy capacity and strategies. An Italian field trip is on Oct. 15 to the University of Miami. A Town Hall meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 16 at Ponce de Leon Middle School regarding the education referendum. SIPA will hold a Cultural Center event on Oct. 16. Language arts students will participate in an open mic poetry event at 4:15 p.m. on Oct. 17, followed by a language arts parent workshop at 5:30 p.m. There will be a senior high magnet fair at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 17 at Miami Senior High. There will be a German Presentation on Oct. 18 at Coral Reef Senior High. The German Heritage Luncheon is Oct. 19. FIPA Parents Night Out is Oct. 19. Oct. 20 is PTSA Service Day. Red Ribbon activities are scheduled for Oct. 23-31. A visit from the Fairchild Million Orchid Project is on Oct. 23. The mathematics department will conduct a parent workshop at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 24. Richard Kern will present to all grades on Oct. 25. Oct. 26 is a teacher planning day, and Oct. 29 begins the second marking period. Oct. 31 is Twin Day and the Fall Social. The PTSA general meeting is Nov. 1 at 8:30 p.m. Nov. 6 is Election Day and a teacher planning day. The next EESAC meeting is November 13.

Open Forum: Ms. Daniels gave an update on the sports that are in season.
