Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of minutes: Mrs. Robledo called the meeting to order at 8:20 a.m. The minutes from Oct. 2, 2018, were reviewed and approved.
SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Process (SIP). Mr. Rivers the School Improvement Process Impact Review that was to be completed on or before November 02, 2018. Based on an internal review, the SIP team was tasked with determining if the Sustained Essential Practice for Culture and Academic Programs is being implemented with fidelity. We were to make any necessary changes and record them in Phase II of the SIP.
Official Business: Mr. Rivers explained that the Florida School Recognition Program’s funds (A-plus money) has been traditionally used as a bonus for the faculty and staff. The faculty voted to keep the same distribution formula that was approved last school year. The EESAC voted unanimously to approve the use of the funding for bonuses for faculty and staff.
Principal’s Message: Mrs. Stroleny discussed recent and upcoming events. The Hispanic Heritage luncheon was Oct. 5. The Language Arts department presented an open mic poetry event and a parent workshop on Oct. 17 to a full house. The German Unification luncheon was Oct. 19. More than 60 volunteers participated in the PTSA beautification service day on Oct. 20. Red Ribbon activities, including the Twin Day Social, took place during the last week of October, and we exceeded our United Way goal. Students attended a Cyber Safety presentation from the State Attorney's office on Nov. 2. Carver was honored with the Blue Ribbon Award in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 7. The DSD1 Exams German Consulate Award Certificates were presented on Nov. 7. Sixth-graders attended a field trip to Bird Bowl on Nov. 9. The snow cone day for eighth-graders on Nov. 9 was a big success. Science Fair week is Nov. 13-16, with a Science workshop about the FSA and Biology EOC on Nov. 15. Give Miami Day is Nov. 15. Mountain Films will be presented through science classes on Nov. 16. The seventh-grade field trip to Dave and Busters is Nov. 19. Sixth-graders will have a snow cone day and Spike-It-Up on Nov. 20. Eighth-grade students will tour Coral Gables High School on Nov. 20. Nov. 21 is a teacher planning day. The field trip to St. Augustine is Nov. 30. Ninety-seven students qualified for the Principal's Honor Roll luncheon on Dec. 4. The next EESAC meeting is Dec. 4.
Mrs. Stroleny also reviewed recent honors. Andrea Martinez received a plaque for the 2018 Magnet Schools of America Poster Competition. We are a Silver STE(A)M School and also the 2018-2019 region winner of the mini-grant competition for schools by the Foundation for New Education Initiatives, Inc. Former student Zoe Diederich received a Certificate of Appreciation form the City of Miami for her efforts to preserve the health and vibrancy of our natural resources; she earned first place from the American Society of Civil Engineers and a “Best in the Fair” Ying Scholar Award. Italian students participated in “Italianita’ Pronti e Go!,” a contest launched by FATI, the state association of Teachers of Italian: Massimo Tornese earned second place and Sofia Vega was third. Ava Maule was the Algebra Nation Karma Points iPad Winner for October 2018. Mrs. Stroleny also discussed the Social Emotional Initiatives from Middle School Redesign, including a mentoring program and circles during homeroom. Teachers have attended training for Mawi professional development.
Open Forum: Mrs. Daniels discussed athletics. In cross-country, varsity and junior varsity boys won the county championships, varsity girls were country runners-up and junior varsity girls were fifth in the county. Marc Dabby was the individual boys’ country champion. The boys’ soccer team was South Division runner-up. Volleyball season is in progress and softball is upcoming. Mrs. Robledo discussed Referendum 362, which was approved by 72 percent of voters to fund teacher salaries and school safety. The eighth-grade field trip to Islands of Adventure is on Dec. 7. Mrs. Fernandez said 20 students will compete in a mathematics competition on Nov. 13.
