Approval of minutes: Mrs. Robledo called the meeting to order at 8:20 a.m. The minutes from Jan. 8, 2019, were reviewed and approved.
SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Plan (SIP). Mr. Rivers reported on the 2019-2020 School Improvement Plan (SIP) Waivers: NO CONTRACT WAIVER(S) was requested; NO ALTERNATE SUPPLEMENT MODEL WAIVER (ASM) was requested. The staff voted to continue our Block Schedule; result of vote was 88%. Parents should have received a flier regarding the state accountability report, which is like a school report card. Materials have arrived for the restroom beautification project.
Principal’s Message: Mrs. Stroleny reviewed recent events. The final magnet tour was fully attended on Jan. 9. We received the usual number of applications for next year’s class with approximately 1,800 applicants for 350 seats. The Shakespeare Showcase on Jan. 31 was a huge success. The PTSA had a successful fundraiser with the Scholastic Book Fair on Feb. 4-11. We held a faculty meeting on Feb. 7. On Feb. 9, approximately 70 students and parents participated in a school beatification of the grounds, organized by the PTSA. On Feb. 13, AdvancEd Accreditation took place with two components: school site visits (Carver was not involved) and a principal interview committee, in which Mrs. Stroleny participated and showed our focus on educational goals. On Feb. 15, we held our Spring Social. Mrs. Stroleny commended the work of the PTSA with approximately 30 volunteers at three locations. At their request, eighth-graders used the field for their social. Mrs. Stroleny explained that we are going to great efforts to show students that we care about them and listen to them. On Feb. 20, the Black History Luncheon was provided for students during both lunches in both cafeterias with a special lunch for the regular student lunch price. The PTSA decorated both cafeterias; Mrs. Sans said that PTA stayed for lunch and it was delicious, and she acknowledged Mrs. Palma-Gonzalez as the creative decorator. On Feb. 21, author Leslea Newman gave presentations to eighth-graders in a joint venture between language arts and social studies. Feb. 22 is Alumni Day for former students from Carver High School; the event, organized by Mr. Scippio, also features performances by some of our current students. The Literacy Team will meet on Feb. 25 with the focus of building literacy across the campus for teachers of non-language arts courses. The Spanish Talent Show, organized by Mrs. Noa, is at 5 p.m. on Feb. 27. On March 15 the magnet lottery will take place. The Friends of Carver fundraiser is on March 16. The spring musical, organized by Mrs. Harmon, is on March 20. March 22 is Hoop-It Up for eighth-graders. Spring break is March 25-29. The FSA Writing assessments take place April 1-12. The next EESAC meeting is scheduled for April 2 but might need to be rescheduled. We are in the midst of a special initiative with 50 SAT vocabulary words in 50 days. Mrs. Robledo suggested a foreign language connection. Administrative walk-throughs are taking place. Mrs. Maria Falla has replaced Mrs. Vilma Gonzalez who retired at the end of January; we are also working with a treasurer from another school. Mrs. Stroleny concluded with a safety update, explained that safety is a component of every faculty meeting and that the administration is pleased with our progress.
Open Forum: Mrs. Daniel reported that a group of girls’ athletes attended National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Feb. 20 at the University of Miami where they met with college athletes and administrators. Track and field season ended, and boys’ and girls’ varsity and junior varsity teams were all county runners-up. The girls’ tennis team took first place and boys’ team was runner-up at a recent match. The girls’ bowling team won first place at a recent competition. Golf season begins next week, and basketball is starting soon. Mrs. Stroleny said we will be recognized at the next school board meeting for the 5 Star Award. Dr. Garcia reported that 14 students participated in the District Science Fair where three students qualified for the Florida State Science Fair. They are Flora Grinfeder, Brendan Groff-Vazquez, and Nicholas Gonzalez. Barnett Pesin placed third at the SECME math competition and the Science Brain Bowl team took first place. Carver took first and third place with two teams competing in the county Geography Bee. Carver will compete in Math Counts on Feb. 24. Former student Zoe Diederich, now at Coral Reef High School, qualified for the International Science Fair as a ninth-grader. Diane Li, Student Council president, reported on a proposal from Student Council, which would like to change the awards ceremony with a certification of excellence for all students, perhaps by language or grade level; Mr. Rivers asked for a copy of the proposal to examine. Mrs. Robledo commended the student-generated idea. Mrs. Palma-Gonzalez said the African-American luncheon for the faculty is on Feb. 28.
