Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of minutes: Mrs. Stroleny called the meeting to order at 8:25 a.m. The minutes from September 9, 2019, were reviewed and approved.

SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Process (SIP). Mr. Rivers gave a snapshot of i-Ready diagnostic results, the testing window ended on Sept. 27. In reading, 1,019 students were tested, and 1,007 were tested in math. In grade 6 reading, 74 percent of the students tested on or above grade level; in grade 7, 83 percent of the students tested on or above grade level; and in grade 8, 87 percent of the students tested on or above grade level. In grade 6 math, 76 percent of the students tested on or above grade level; in grade 7, 61 percent of the students tested on or above grade level; and in grade 8, 68 percent of the students tested on or above grade level. Mr. Rivers said significant improvement in math takes place during the year because many concepts are often unfamiliar with students at the beginning of each grade level. He said there are three diagnostic testing sessions but that we do not normally test on the third time because we are a Tier 1 school and it is optional. This data supplements the SIP. Mrs. Toledo mentioned that assignments / lessons in i-Ready are aligned with each child’s needs.

Principal’s Message: Mrs. Stroleny introduced Cheryl Delavalette, EESAC business community representative, who is also volunteering in Mrs. Toledo’s classes and in the main office. She is very involved with Mindful Kids Miami, which trains educators on how to be mindful and to infuse mindfulness in their instruction to reduce anxiety and stress. September events were recapped. Sept. 9 and 10 were picture days. Approximately 900 parents attended open house on Sept. 18; we also collected non-perishable goods for the Bahamas relief effort. Sept. 20 was Global Climate Change Awareness Day with activities through social studies and science classes. The PTSA organized snow cone day for seventh-graders on Sept. 20. Sept. 25 was Dads Come to School Day with more than 65 dads attending. The Variety Show, organized by Mrs. Harmon, was on Sept. 26. Project Sentry and the FIPA breakfast meet and greet were on Sept. 27. The Breakfast Club, organized by Mrs. Valdes, has had more than 50 students in attendance daily. During September, counselors visited all homerooms. Class size requirements have been met and we are in compliance. Mrs. Stroleny also discussed upcoming events. Magnet recruitment has begun and runs through mid-January. Teachers are participating in the MAWI book study, a schoolwide professional development. On Oct. 4, the Hispanic Heritage luncheon also is taking place. The GIPA Oktoberfest is on Oct. 5 at the German-American Social Club. Seventh-graders will attend the Kitty Hawk field trip on Oct. 7. The Language Arts department presents its Open Mic poetry event on Oct. 8. Oct. 9 is a teacher planning day. Oct. 10 is the parent science fair workshop. FIPA parent night out is on Oct 11. The German-American Heritage luncheon is on Oct. 11. The Scholastic Book Fair runs Oct. 14-18. On Oct 18, we will be tented for pest control.
Oct. 19 is the PTSA Service Day, but it will be rescheduled if tenting occurs. Oct 20 is Principal for a Day. On Oct. 23, Richard Kern will make presentations to all students; we also will hold a high school magnet fair, and all grades levels are encouraged to attend. A Shakespeare Troup will perform on Oct. 24. Oct. 25 is a teacher planning day. Oct. 30 is the next MAWI book study for teachers. Oct. 25-31 is Red Ribbon Week. Oct. 31 is the Fall Social and Twin Day, when twins pledge to be drug free. Seventh-graders are encouraged to apply for the Duke TIP Program. The Carver Edmodo group now includes school morning announcements. We again earned the Label Designation in French.

Open Forum: Mrs. Daniels reported on athletics. The cross-country teams participated in their first meet and did very well, including first place for the junior varsity girls and first individually for the varsity boys. Both boys’ and girls’ soccer teams have started their seasons undefeated at 4-0. Volleyball season will begin soon. Mrs. Robledo said her Advanced Placement students created their accounts with the College Board and that it was a source of pride and ownership. Mr. Visconti, who signed up for his account with the College Board, said he felt accomplished and excited about the advanced education he is receiving. Mrs. Devalette said the level of French instruction here is impressive. Mr. Lucas said this is his first meeting and that he is glad to be here and offered his help.
