Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of minutes: Mrs. Stroleny called the meeting to order at 8:20 a.m. The minutes from October 1, 2019, were reviewed and approved.

SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Plan (SIP). Recently, the leadership team facilitated the Internal Impact Review / Phase II Systems & Data Reflection process. During this process, schools are charged with reviewing their systems and making adjustments/modifications (if appropriate) to their implementation steps and priority actions. This task does not solely rest with the leadership team; input and data is solicited from teachers. Mrs. Stroleny commended Mr. Rivers for his work on this task. Mr. Rivers shared the findings from the process and what will be included in the Quarter 2 Implementation.

Principal’s Message: Mrs. Stroleny reviewed recent events. The Hispanic Heritage celebration and luncheon on October 4 were well attended; the celebration included a door decorating contest. The PTSA had a successful Book Fair fundraiser. The school was tented for termites on Oct. 18. The German-American Heritage Luncheon was successful. The South Florida Shakespeare Troupe performed for eighth-graders. Principal Today was Alex Wilson, a Biology professor from the University of Miami; she can be an asset in our STEAM certification. Red Ribbon Week and Twin Day were a big success. Richard Kern made an outstanding presentation to all three grade levels about the Mayan jungles. Citizenship is the core value for November. Nov. 4 was a teacher planning day and was the second part of a STEAM workshop. Dr. Garcia led the first workshop, and Mr. Gonzalez led the second. Mrs. Daniels led a team building activity on both sessions. Parents will attend a Cybercrime/Cybersafety presentation at 8:15 a.m. on Nov. 8, followed by a presentation for sixth-graders at 9:05 a.m. The next PTSA meeting is on Nov. 7. Nov. 11 is the Veterans Day holiday. Teachers will participate in Mawi professional development on Nov. 13. Nov. 13 is the Sprachdiplom Celebration for German students. Science Fair week is Nov. 18-22. Science Fair Parent Night is at 4:15 p.m. on Nov. 20, followed at 5:15 p.m. with a workshop on Biology and FCAT science testing. Nov. 21 is Give Miami Day. Nov. 26 is a Snow Cone Day and Spike-It-Up for sixth-graders. Eighth-graders will take a field trip to Coral Gables High School on Nov. 26. A teacher workday is on Nov. 27. Nov. 28 begins the Thanksgiving holiday. Dec. 3 is the next EESAC meeting.

Open Forum: Dr. Garcia discussed our work toward the STEAM designation and Science Fair. This is our fifth year involving the STEAM designation and we have been at the Silver level for the past four years. We are striving toward the Gold level and are making progress in areas where we had difficulty meeting requirements in the past. This includes working with all foreign language associations as community partners. We also are making it easier for teachers the meet requirements by providing in-house professional developments to show inter-departmental involvement. We expect the official District visitation will be between December and February, and we are working hard to have everything ready for them. This includes a STEAM wall and display to show that we are a STEAM school. Mrs. Mustelier is spearheading work to involve experts on the ocean to this process. Science Fair is an extended process for the first and second nine weeks. We have streamlined the process and hopefully results will again be outstanding. Parent volunteers are encouraged. Parents look at all projects on parent night. Our spiral curriculum prepares students to do Science Fair projects in eighth grade. Carver Science Fair has become a model for the District. Mrs. Stroleny encouraged all students and parents to come to view the projects. The amount of data is impressive, and expectation are high. Mrs. Daniels reported on athletics. In cross-country, the boys’ and girls’ varsity teams both finished as county runner-up and the boys’ junior varsity was county champion. In soccer, both the boys’ and girls’ teams were zone champions. Volley season is underway and bowling season will begin soon. Mrs. Delavalette asked about funding for athletics for athletic teams and sponsorships. Dr. Garcia and Mrs. Daniels explained that parents are involved with funding and that we also receive donations but that teams are not eligible for corporate sponsorship.
