Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of minutes: Mrs. Robledo called the meeting to order at 8:20 a.m. The minutes from November 5, 2019, were reviewed and approved.

SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Plan (SIP). Mr. Rivers reported that i-Ready diagnostic 2 started Dec. 2 and runs through Dec. 20 for all students in reading and math. The District is asking for information for tracking from certain grades, and this includes sixth grade, which must be finished testing by Dec. 16. Mr. Rivers said we use i-Ready data, as well as other data, to drive instruction and plan lessons. Mrs. Fernandez said math teachers can assign specific lessons based on student needs as reflected in the program data. Mr. Rivers also discussed the 2019-2020 Initially Targeted and Initially Advised Schools for Attendance Boundaries information. A copy of the memorandum and the attachments was circulated among the members; a copy will be kept on file. Mr. Rivers explained that every year, the Attendance Boundary Committee (ABC) reviews boundary proposals and make recommendations to address its impact on our students and programs. G. W. Carver Middle is not on the initially targeted and advised list for the 2019-2020 school year.

Principal’s Message: Mrs. Stroleny was not able to be part of EESAC meeting today. For the past two days she has been leading professional development on behalf of the National Institute for School Leadership (NISL). Mr. Rivers reviewed November highlights. Magnet recruitment for incoming sixth-grade students is going strong. On Nov. 8, Cyber Crime presentations were conducted for parents and for sixth-grade students. Seventh-graders attended a Malala photo exhibit on Nov. 14. Science Fair Week took place Nov. 18-22. Give Miami Day on Nov. 21 was a big success for the PTSA, exceeding $11,000 in funds raised for the auditorium renovation. Mrs. Castro was recognized as our Teacher of the Year by the City of Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce on Nov. 21. Nov. 26 was Spike-It-Up for sixth-grade students. Eighth-graders took a field trip on Nov. 26 to Coral Gables Senior High. The Thanksgiving recess was Nov. 27-28.
Upcoming events include Mural Work by the piazza, commencing the week of Dec. 6. Eighth-graders will take field trip on Dec. 6 to Islands of Adventure. The seventh-grade field trip also is on Dec. 6. The Holiday Show, directed by Mrs. Harmon, is at 5 p.m. on Dec. 12. On Dec. 13, the German Department will hold its Winterfest. On Dec. 16, all students will attend the Holiday Show, directed by Mrs. Valdes. Dec. 20 is Kick-It-Up for seventh-graders. On behalf of Mrs. Stroleny and the Carver family, wishing everyone a happy winter holiday and all good wishes for the new year. After the holiday break, we return to school Jan. 6. A+ funds proposals are due to District by Jan. 24. EESAC has already approved this plan.
Open Forum: Mrs. Daniels said that the girls’ volleyball team is competing in the District playoffs today, the boys’ varsity volleyball team on Thursday, and the junior varsity boys’ team on Dec. 10. Track and field season has started with final tryouts today. Mrs. Toledo said that testing in Microsoft Word certification is going well, as we have many students taking the certification test.
