Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of Previous Minutes: Ingrid Robledo, Chairwoman, called the E.E.S.A.C. meeting to order at 8:15 a.m. The September E.E.S.A.C. minutes were reviewed. The necessary corrections were made and the minutes were approved.

Expenditure of E.E.S.A.C. Monies: The 2003 – 2004 E.E.S.A.C. expenditures were reviewed. $815.00 was spent on the license fee for online software. $385.00 was spent on the Basic Math database software. $1109.70 was spent on the classroom Jeopardy buzzers. $7200.00 was spent on the HP 8 cell lion batteries/charges. Mrs. Gonzalez pointed out that all of the 2003 – 2004 E.E.S.A.C. expenditures were technology based. For the 2004 – 2005 E.E.S.A.C. expenditures, one set of the HP 8 cell lion batteries / charges has already been purchased. No other expenditures have been made.

School Improvement Plan (S.I.P.) Update: The 2004 – 2005 S.I.P. has been submitted to the ACCESS Center. Carver is implementing a quarterly test in reading and math to measure how students are progressing. In social studies and science an in-house quarterly exam is being developed and will be given at the end of the first grading period. The exams will measure each student’s progress. If there is no progress made, then the issue can be addressed. The parent study skills workshop was a huge success largely due to extra credit being offered in the social studies classes. The math workshop is being given on October 6. The dates for the reading workshop and writing workshop have not been determined. The integrated curriculum had its culminating activity on the September 16th teacher-planning day. Breakfast and lunch were provided. During a morning session and an afternoon session teachers met in small groups and then reconvened to share information. Mrs. Robledo commented that it truly showcased the talent and dedication of the faculty. Most teachers felt that it was a worthwhile experience. Pictures were taken and they will be displayed in the main office.

Open Forum: Mrs. Robledo announced that Carver had received the $91,510.17 from the 2004 Florida Recognition Program. At a previous faculty meeting the faculty voted to divide the money between the Carver staff. She asked that the E.E.S.A.C. committee review the teachers’ proposal. The E.E.S.A.C. Council reviewed and approved the proposal. Mrs. Robledo also announced that the faculty had voted for the 2004 – 2005 teacher of the year at the last faculty meeting. The faculty chose Catherine Duduoet. The other candidate was Gabriele Moghani. Mrs. Gonzalez mentioned that German Unity day was being celebrated at Carver and had been organized by Mrs. Moghani. ACCESS Center representatives, the German consulate, and other district level representatives would be attending. She commended G.I.P.A. for the major effort it had put forth for the event. Mr. Sands talked about the United Way Drive. Carver has almost reached its 2004 – 2005 goal. Mrs. Gonzalez told the E.E.S.A.C. committee that she had met with the Student Council officers over lunch where certain issues were addressed. With regard to the socials, Carver will be having three socials: the Halloween Social, the Valentine Social, and the Spring Social. The students were concerned about not having the Valentine Social. The students promised improved attendance in exchange for the Valentine Social. They are also going to improve student membership in the P.T.S.A. As an added incentive, the P.T.S.A. will offer the students who join a “no homework pass” that can be used in exchange for one homework assignment in late October. The Spanish Department is going to have its annual Hispanic Cooking Contest on October 22nd. Participating students will bring in homemade appetizers, main dishes, and desserts to be judged by the teachers. Students who win will be given gift certificates. TAPAS will be held on October 14th. Organized by S.I.P.A., it will provide parents and teachers a chance to socialize while raising funds for the organization. Mr. Sands stated that the 2004 Mock Elections are going be held on October 25th and 26th. All students will vote in the media center with their social studies classes. The 7th grade civics students will study the demographic results. The Club Fair took place on October 1st. The majority of students have joined clubs, which will start meeting in October. Mrs. Gonzalez reminded the E.E.S.A.C. committee that all parent volunteers are going to need to get a district required background check. She also stated that all E.E.S.A.C. parent representatives should get the mandatory background check as well. Parent volunteers should see Mrs. Basso for the details. The November E.E.S.A.C. meeting happens to coincide with the 2004 Presidential election. The committee meeting voted to reschedule the meeting for Wednesday, November 3rd. The committee voted to cancel the March E.E.S.A.C. meeting. Mr. Scippio will not be returning to E.E.S.A.C. this year so a teacher representative will need to be elected at the October 13th faculty meeting.
