Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of minutes: Mr. Stroleny called the meeting to order at 8:20 a.m. The minutes from January 24, 2020, were reviewed and approved.

SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Process (SIP). Mr. Rivers reported that on Feb. 5 the faculty met and discuss the 2020-2021 Educational Excellence School Advisory Councils (EESAC) Waivers. There were no contract waivers or alternative supplement model waivers (ASM) requested. The faculty voted to continue the block schedule; 95 percent in favor of the block schedule. Mr. Rivers reported that we are currently in Phase IV (quarter 3 and quarter 4 implementation) of the SIP. We are currently disaggregating data from our midyear assessments and having data chats with our teachers. He indicated that the leadership is continuously collecting/reviewing data from various sources to include in our SIP and make applicable changes (when necessary). On Feb. 14, the window for the state-mandated mental and emotional health course closed. The course included different grade-level appropriate videos and discussion questions on a myriad of topics related to mental and emotional health. Alejandro Vides said the videos were helpful for him and his fellow students.

Official business: The members voted unanimously to approve the waiver to maintain our block schedule.

Principal’s Message: Mrs. Stroleny discussed recent events. A town hall meeting with the superintendent took place on Jan. 28 regarding proposed changes to the bell schedules. On Jan. 30, our Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Castro, attended the District Teacher of the Year banquet. On Jan. 31, students attended a field trip, organized by Mrs. Noa, to St. Augustine. The PTSA held a service day at the school on Feb. 1. The PTSA Dine Out Day at Chipotle was on Feb. 4. The District STEAM visit was on Feb. 4. IS testing for potential incoming students took placed on Feb. 5. Love and Kindness Day and the Spring Social were on Feb. 14. Approximately 100 students are attending the Principal’s Honor Roll luncheon on Feb. 18. The Spanish Talent Show is on Feb. 20. The annual Friends of Carver fundraiser is on Feb. 22. The Black History luncheon is on Feb. 27. Carver Alumni Day is on Feb. 28. The PTSA will holds its next meeting on March 5. On March 6, sixth-graders will attend a short theatre presentation during homeroom. The Superintendent’s 5-K is on March 7. FIPA and GIPA galas are on March 14. On March 17, Mrs. Harmon’s musical theater students will present “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” Francophone Day is on March 20. Spring Recess begins on March 23. Mrs. Stroleny commended the PTSA for the project to bring seating to the piazza. The Scholastic Book Fair is in March.

Open Forum: Mrs. Daniels was recognized as Middle School Coach of the Year and will be recognized at a banquet on Feb. 22. On Feb. 8 at the county track and field finals, boys’ varsity and junior varsity finished in fourth place; the girls’ varsity took third; and the girls’ junior varsity was county runner-up. On Feb. 9, 15 students completed the Miami Kids Run at the Miami Marathon. Boys’ and girls’ basketball seasons have started, and tennis is ongoing. Golf is upcoming. Dr. Garcia gave an update about the District STEAM visit. He said we showcased what we do for STEAM here and expressed that “We seem to be in a good place. We should move up to that gold level. It’s always a very positive experience. We have a lot to learn and we plan to be even better next year.” Dr. Garcia also discussed the South Florida Regional Science and Engineering Fair and the associated Miami-Dade STEAM Expo on Feb. 8. We had 14 science fair projects represented and Isabella Delgado’s project was selected for the state science fair. We also participated in all SECME competitions and our bridge team took second place. Mr. Rivers and many science teachers attended the EXPO. Mrs. Toledo said the technology program is receiving 30 new computers in addition to furniture. Mrs. Robledo explained that she has missed some recent meetings due to her work with UTD contract negotiations.
