Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of Previous Minutes: Ingrid Robledo, Chairwoman, called the E.E.S.A.C. meeting to order at 8:15 a.m. The October E.E.S.A.C. minutes were reviewed. The necessary corrections were made and the minutes were approved.

School Improvement Plan (S.I.P.) Update: Mrs. Gonzalez detailed the progress of the School Improvement Plan (S.I.P.). She mentioned that the language arts quarterly exams have been completed and the data has been given to the language arts teachers. The calendarization of the FCAT reading skills has been completed through February and will assist the reinforcement of the FCAT reading skills in the different subject areas. On the October 15th teacher workday there was a Reading workshop for the Carver faculty. There is an upcoming Parent FCAT Writing workshop that will be offered on November 17th. On the November 18th early release day, there will be an FCAT Writing workshop for the faculty. The math quarterly exams have been completed and the data has been given to the math teachers. The calendarization of the FCAT math skills has been completed and will assist the reinforcement of the FCAT math skills in the different subject areas. There was a parent FCAT Math workshop on October 6th. Data is still being compiled for the social studies and science quarterly exams. There was a Parent Science Fair workshop on October 26th. Over 60 parents attended. Technology is being incorporated into the curriculum through the humanities classes. Mrs. Gonzalez also stated that the curriculum integration meetings are in full swing. On Tuesday mornings, the teachers meet with their departments and on Thursdays they meet with grade level teachers from different departments.

Principal’s Message: Mrs. Gonzalez explained that the E.E.S.A.C. expenditures will be updated each month. To date, $3655.00 has been spent on the batteries and charger set. $4290.00 has been spent on chargers. Two additional technology support technicians that have been hired to assist Omar Valerio. They will work to maintain the high technology levels being used at Carver.

Open Forum: Mrs. Gonzalez reported that the Halloween Social was a success. Dividing the students according to grade level and having three separate dances worked very well and there were no problems. She thanked the P.T.S.A. for funding three DJs. All profits from the Halloween Social went to the United Way Student Campaign. Mrs. Gonzalez thanked Mr. Sands and Mrs. Robledo for their hard work with the United Way campaign. A total of $1,586.00 was raised by the Carver faculty. Mrs. Gonzalez announced that social studies teacher, Martina Rosenfield, took a year-long leave of absence. Silvia Villacis has been hired to replace Ms. Rosenfield. Coral Reef High School will be visiting Carver on November 12th. DASH High School will be visiting Carver on November 19th. Mrs. Gonzalez also announced that tonight is the Town Hall meeting with Dr. Rudy Crew for Region IV. It will be held at Booker T. Washington high school and all interested parents, students, and teachers are invited to attend. Mr. Sands reviewed the results of the Carver student mock elections. Students chose John Kerry as President, Betty Castor for Senator, and Jimmy Morales as the Mayor of Miami-Dade County. The elections provided many teachable moments in all the disciplines. Ms. Daniels mentioned that student athletes have been wearing their team shirts on the day of their respective athletic events. It has been a great source of pride and school spirit. Carver’s Girls Varsity Cross Country team was the runner up in the countywide competition. Mr. Stringfellow commented that the Carver website lacked new and current information and could use some attention. He suggested that Carver could model their website after the high school websites. Mrs. Gonzalez said that she would look into the problem and probably recruit someone from the staff to take control of the website. Mrs. Gonzalez announced that Carver won the trophy for best attendance for the first grading period among all the middle schools in the district. If Carver doesn’t maintain the highest attendance for the next grading period, then the trophy will be given to the next school that wins. To promote attendance Gardner’s Markets will give a $50.00 gift certificate to the homeroom teacher who maintains the highest homeroom attendance. Mrs. Gonzalez hopes that the P.T.S.A. will provide a breakfast to the winning homeroom. Mrs. Gramling praised the Carver Tellers Halloween story telling and said that it was a great opportunity for the students. Next week the Carver Tellers have their national competition. Mrs. Robledo said that the Hispanic Cooking Competition was a success and many students participated. She said that teachers enjoyed the judging. Mrs. Gonzalez commented that the student recipes should be published into a cookbook.
