Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of Previous Minutes: Ingrid Robledo, Chairwoman, called the E.E.S.A.C. meeting to order at 8:15 a.m. The November E.E.S.A.C. minutes were reviewed. The necessary corrections were made and the minutes were approved.

Principal’s Message: The principal’s message was given by Shelley Stroleny. Mrs. Stroleny announced that the curriculum integration meetings have been going well. The Language Arts Department is meeting with the Social Studies Department to facilitate the reinforcement of the language arts skills in the social studies classes. The Math Department meets regularly with the Science Department to reinforce the math skills through the science classes. The high level of coordination can be visibly seen throughout the classes. The reading and mathematics quarterly exam results have been tabulated using the Edusoft Software Program. In reading the 6th grade had 50% mastery, the 7th grade had 79% mastery, and the 8th grade had 85% mastery. In
mathematics the 6th grade had 68% mastery, the 7th grade had 60% mastery, and the 8th grade 67% mastery. The in-house quarterly exams for writing, social studies, and science have also been tabulated using in-house scoring methods. On the first quarter writing exam the 6th grade had 50% mastery, the 7th grade had 75% mastery, and the 8th grade had 73% mastery. For the second quarter writing exam the 6th grade had 66% mastery, the 7th grade had 87% mastery, and the 8th grade had 83% mastery. In social studies the 6th grade had 92% mastery, the 7th grade had 68% mastery, and the 8th grade had 81% mastery. In science the 6th grade had 77 % mastery, the 7th grade had 89 % mastery, and the 8th grade had 67% mastery. Mrs. Stroleny commented that the 6th grade low reading and writing mastery was due to the students’ short time here at Carver. The low performing 6th graders are placed in supplementary reading courses that help the students build the necessary skills. The benefits can be seen in the higher 7th grade mastery scores. With regards to the 2004 – 2005 E.E.S.A.C. expenditures, ninety flash drives were purchased for teachers, administrators, and support staff for a total cost of $2,750.00. Mr. Dubey recommended that the P.T.S.A. purchase flash drives for students to purchase.

Open Forum: Mid-term review week is December 6th through December 10th. All teachers have been reviewing and study guides have been given in every subject. All extra-curricular activities have been suspended. Mid-term week is December 13th through December 16th. Make up midterms will be given on December 17th. The Kick It Up soccer competition will be held for 7th graders on December 17th. Mrs. Harmon’s and Mrs. Gramling’s holiday concert was on December 2nd. It was a huge success. Mrs. Green’s D-FY-IT club is sponsoring a teddy bear drive through December 17th. The Science Fair judging in the gym began on December 6th and runs through December 9th. Science Fair Parent Night will be held on December 9th.
Magnet recruitment will be coming to an end on January 31st. Mrs. Basso reported that tours have been added due to high interest. Mr. Dubey paid Mrs. Basso a compliment about the Carver presentation at the magnet recruitment fair. Mrs. Peralta, Mrs. Castillo, and Mrs. Daniels also helped with the magnet recruitment fair. Mr. Dubey suggested that Carver employ a diverse group of parents to assist with Carver’s presentation at the fair. Lisa Mongillo from Connecticut will take the place of Mrs. Byrd as the 7th grade language arts teacher. Mrs. Byrd will start maternity leave soon. Mrs. Mongillo was a teacher at M.A.S.T. Academy and was recommended by Ms. Sutton, a M.A.S.T. teacher and the mother of Mrs. Izquierdo. Mr. Jones has taken over as Language Arts Department chairperson. Mr. Dubey updated the committee about the Concert Series. 65 students recently attended the Nutcracker. The upcoming event is a stage play called a Raisin in the Sun. He commented that the 2005 – 2006 calendar will have an even wider scope of cultural programs. Mr. Dubey also brought information about programs offered by the Seminole Tribe of Florida Museum. The museum is always advocating for diversity and would be a good field trip for the Social Studies Department. Mrs. Basso announced that Carver had four new National Board teachers – Sindy Garcia, Deborah Small, Rick Hudson, and Maggie Izquierdo. Carver now has 14 National Board Certified teachers. Mrs. Robledo announced that the German Club and the Club d’Arte Dramatico field trip to Islands of Adventure was a success.
