Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of minutes: Mr. Sands called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. The minutes from January 26, 2021, were reviewed and approved.

SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Process (SIP). Mr. Rivers said from January 4-29 we completed Phase 3, the midyear review of the SIP, to see where and if we needed to adjust based on surveys, data, and other information. We are currently in the Phase 4 implementation stage (Feb. 1-June 9) for cultural and academic programs. Mr. Rivers discussed the Attendance Boundary Committee (ABC) targeted and advised schools. Boundary changes are run through the District. We are a magnet school, so we are not affected directly. Schools in our region (Central), as well the North and South Region, are on the “Final Advised Schools” list. March 16 is the next EESAC meeting and we will discuss various waivers. We will be meeting as a faculty for a vote prior to that meeting.

Official business: The EESAC reviewed and discussed the School Dress Code Declaration for the 2021-2022 school year. Mr. Rivers discussed the importance and benefits of school uniforms. The EESAC decided that we will “not be voting on the school dress code.”

Principal’s Message: Mrs. Stroleny said the new state testing calendar has been published. The FSA Writing assessment for all grades is April 5-12. The FSA Reading, Mathematics, Civics EOC, eighth-grade Science, Algebra EOC, Geometry EOC, Biology EOC, and Advanced Placement exams are scheduled throughout May. For many of these exams the testing window has been extended through June 9. Mrs. Stroleny said she is very confident that we are doing what we need to do to prepare for these exams. We are monitoring student progress through iReady, gradebook, observations, and walkthroughs. The Social Studies Department had a well-received parent workshop for the Civics EOC. It has not been easy and there has been a great learning curve, but we have accepted that challenge, adding I truly wish we weren’t testing but we are ready. Mrs. Rivera, assistant principal, is working on next year's master schedule to create an optimum experience for our students and teachers, and she is doing an awesome job. Our eighth-grade PTSA parent committee is working with the eighth-grade team leaders, Mrs. Daniels and Mrs. Small, to create some fun events for our eighth-grade class. This will include eighth-grade hoodie, sweatpants, t-shirt, and a drive-through parade. Mr. Rivers is working on the End-of-Year Awards Ceremony. Picture make-up day and retakes are scheduled for March 1. Yearbooks are on sale with special ads for eighth-graders. High quality morning announcements put together by Mrs. Serrano help keep our student body informed. We have increased our social media communication, as well as our administrator outreach through SchoolMessenger. Friends of Carver is March 13. Spring Recess is March 29-April 2. Mrs. Stroleny gave a big thank you to the PTSA for hosting the faculty Black History luncheon. Our cafeterias provided a delicious luncheon for our students. The United Way Student Campaign greatly exceeded our goal as more than $4,000 was raised. Sixth-graders won a week of no school uniforms for having the largest grade-level contribution.

Open Forum: Mrs. Vinat discussed the block schedule waiver and asked about the procedure to conduct the vote. Mr. Rivers said the District has detailed procedures in place for this vote. Mrs. Vinat mentioned the Letter of Understanding (LOU) addendum, including communication with all stakeholders and communication about quarantines. She said when deep cleaning in a classroom takes place, there must be clear notification on the door, and she said we are doing that already. An email about retirement incentives was sent to the entire faculty. Mrs. Stroleny said signs are placed on the doors according to policy. Mrs. Fernandez asked whether picture makeup day will include MSO students, and Mrs. Stroleny said it will.
