Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of minutes: Mr. Sands called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. The minutes from March 16, 2021, were reviewed and approved.

SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Process (SIP). Mr. Rivers said District iReady testing will take place in May and will be scheduled so that it does not conflict with state testing. Mr. Rivers then discussed end-of-year EESAC requirements. He shared the EOY Assurance Checklist, which outlines requirements from the State and District to ensure that we (EESAC) are in compliance. He also discussed the EESAC Composition Waiver Request. He reviewed our current composition and discussed it with the members. The EESAC voting not to request a change to our current composition for the 2021-2022 school year. Phase V of the SIP will take place May 03 – June 09. During this time, the Leadership and the staff reflect on the areas of strength and opportunities for improvement in both School Culture and Academic Programs, using the continuous improvement reflection worksheet as a guide. Once the data has been gathered and the findings recorded, the leadership team will seek consensus from the staff; the findings will be shared with stakeholders via EESC meeting to approve the updates to Phase V. Mrs. Rodriguez asked about EESAC parent members for next year and said she is willing to remain on the EESAC. Mr. Rivers said he will contact the PTSA president to address this matter.

Principal’s Message: Mrs. Stroleny said our former assistant principal, Mrs. Rivera, has been promoted to temporary principal at John I. Smith K-8. She worked very hard to earn this promotion and is greatly missed here. Magnet recruitment for incoming students is nearly complete. Mrs. Basso is to be commended for her work to fill all student spaces in a challenging year. The District has updated quarantine protocols aligned with CDC recommendations regarding vaccinated individuals and shorter quarantine times (from 14 days to 10 days). Carver has always implemented the District's health and safety protocols with success. The FSA Writing assessment was completed on April 26 at 97 percent tested (3 percent did not test across each grade level). Health screenings for sixth-graders took place on April 26 and 27. We are working on the master schedule for the 2021-2022 school year; it sets us up for success every year for our students and teachers. GOB bond work will begin this summer. No summer school will take place on site at Carver. Our daily student attendance is 95 percent or higher. State testing resumes May 2 for PHY and MSO students. We will be testing in the mornings and in the afternoons. Mrs. Castro has worked diligently in preparing a logistics calendar, and Mrs. Castillo has been working diligently to prepare testing materials for May assessments inclusive of FSA ELA, Mathematics, Civics, eighth-grade Science, Biology, and Geometry. We will implement asynchronous learning for the month of May. Students will remain in homeroom until approximately noon and then move to periods 4 or 5. We are unable to Zoom with students not testing due to lack of bandwidth which could interfere with online testing. Extensive communication with all stakeholders is ongoing so that students are in school for testing. AP testing will take place as follows: German May 4 (11:00 a.m.), French May 10, Spanish May 11, and Italian May 14 at 7:15 a.m. We will hold a virtual new student orientation organized by Mrs. Basso. End-of-year activities will be virtual due to District regulations. We will also hold a drive-by parade. The 2021 Synergy Summer for Carver Team has been selected.

Open Forum: Mr. Sands announced the eight newly elected officers for the 2021-22 Student Council: President Marina Astorga, Vice president Elisa Tarac, Secretary Beatrice Stampino-Strain, Treasurer Maria Chalbaud, EESAC Representatives Mateo Delgado, Uma Gowda, and Salome Tarac (alternate), and PTSA Emilia Rubalcaba. Mr. Hudson announced students who have won awards in recent writing competitions: Ana Iacoviello won the Judge’s Award at the Youth Fair for Creative Writing, Carolina Zager won first place in the Carl Sandburg National Historic Site student poetry contest (middle school level), Julia Corvea was Grand Champion and Miranda Souki was honorable mention in the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association student poetry contest (grades 7-8). Mrs. Vinat recognized Mrs. Castillo and the administration for making testing work for all. She said parents have options this year to allow for flexibility to opt out of testing. EOC scores will only help and not hurt student averages. Graduation and promotion will not be affected if parents opt out of testing. She concluded by saying we know our Carver team will continue to provide the best testing environment for all students who participate in testing.
