Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of minutes: Mr. Sands called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. The minutes from April 27, 2021, were reviewed and approved.

SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Process (SIP). Mr. Rivers said we are currently in Phase V, the final phase, of the SIP. The 2020-2021 Continuous Improvement Reflection Worksheet for Academics and School Culture were discussed with and distributed to the different departments for the purpose of soliciting their input. The focus was on areas of strength for improvement in Academics and School Culture, reflect and make predictions for Academics and School Culture for the 2021-2022 school year, and reflect on the school’s plan to mitigate learning loss due to COVID-19 (new this school year). The SIP was approved by EESAC. We completed all documents before the June 9 deadline. As expected, many of our challenges were directly related to issues surrounding COVID-19. However, we met all intended outcomes. Mr. Rivers mentioned a few emails sent to parents via SchoolMessenger. One message related to early dismissal; school dismisses at 2:40 p.m. the last three days, and school transportation will adjust to that schedule. We were sent the 2019-20 School Financial Report, and it was sent out to all parents in addition to a letter from the Superintendent. Mrs. Stroleny added that the District is offering a huge summer school program and it is not just remediation this year. There are many incentives for teachers to work this summer.

Principal’s Message: Mrs. Stroleny said Mr. Andrew Alvarez, Assistant Principal, has joined our G.W. Carver Middle School family. We are delighted to have him on board especially for the closing of school, which is a very busy time. May has been a very busy month. Schoolwide testing concluded May 26. We had a small number of students absent, and they will make up their exams the first few days of June. Congratulations to Mrs. Castillo, Testing Chairperson, and Mrs. Castro, who developed the ten-page testing logistics schedule with over 200 testing sessions. A.P. testing took place and students completed their exams feeling confident. Mrs. Stroleny thanked Mr. Hudson for his work with the AP testing. A big thank you to the team that made it happen—most successfully! Mrs. Stroleny thanked Mrs. Toledo for supervising students in the auditorium every day.

Mrs. Stroleny discussed end-of-year events. The National Junior Honor Society induction was on May 25. New student orientation was on May 26. Mrs. Valdes is in the process of yearbook distribution. On May 26 the end-of-year music concert organized by Mrs. Harmon was presented on Zoom. On May 27 the seventh-grade Science Fair workshop was hosted by Dr. Garcia with 93 parents attending from the comfort of their own homes. On June 1 and 2 eighth-grade foreign language Zoom meetings will be held to celebrate the three years the students have spent here. On June 3, 7, and 8, grade level end-of-year Zoom meetings will take place. On June 3 and 4, MSO classroom honors will take place. On June 7 and 8 honors, achievements, and recognitions will take place in physical classes and homeroom. On June 7, 8, and 9 grade level parades will take place after school. This schedule was dependent on when we are required to collect devices that we lent out. We lent out more than 600 devices. We are collecting District devices from our students the last six days of school. We are starting with our physical students and finishing with MSO students. The last day of school for students is June 9 and for teachers June 10. GOB bond work will start June 10; it will include work on windows, bathrooms, painting, alarm system, and PA. Mr. Alvarez is working on next year's master schedule. Mr. Rivers and the Carver Synergy team will be planning, developing, and preparing this summer for next school year. The 2020-2021 school year is ending. It has been a most challenging year for everyone; that said, collectively and individually we learned a lot and we will take the lessons learned and the best practices to the new 2021-2022 school year. Mrs. Stroleny said, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Rivers for his work and commitment to our Carver family. He has been the person I run everything by to make sure that the decision is sound and in the best interest of our stakeholders. Secondly, I would like to publicly thank the Carver faculty and staff for their hard work and unending willingness to pivot. Lastly, I want to recognize the hard work of our students and their families for helping us so we could do the work we do. I am very proud of this Carver family and how the family addressed all of challenges! Thank you for your service on EESAC. To those that are moving up to high school I wish you the very best. Those that are returning next year, I look forward to seeing you in August, and to everyone, I wish you and your family a wonderful summer.”

Open Forum: Mrs. Vinat: Union said UTD finalized a LOU for summer school to pay teachers $45 per hour in addition to stipends for attendance for teachers for the summer program. According to CDC guidelines, students will have the option to remove masks for some outdoor activities for summer school. Union bargaining for incentives for next year is taking place, as a deficit is expected. Teachers will get a $1,000 bonus this summer, according to the Governor. Mrs. Vinat said she will share new details as they come available with the faculty and staff. Mr. Sands said the three newly elected EESAC for next school year are here on Zoom today.
