Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of minutes: Mr. Sands called the meeting to order at 8:15 a.m. The minutes from September 21, 2021, were reviewed and approved.
SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Process (SIP). Mr. Rivers said he had to make some modifications to the SIP to meet FLDOE requirements. The 2021 FSA and EOC data was added. Before this data was available, we used i-Ready data. We looked for trends that emerged across grade levels in content areas based on the 2021 FSA and EOC data. Mrs. Artime said when comparing FSA and EOC data from 2019 to 2021 that our area of need is math, which reflects the greatest learning losses. We are focusing our resources there. Math requires daily repetition and routine, and we are doing everything in our power to increase math achievement. We are adding students to our intensive math courses so that those students with needs will be addressed. We are conducting data chats with teachers and students. Additionally, Mr. Gonzalez left our staff as a math teacher on Sept. 9 when he was promoted to another position in the district. The following week, the Math i-Ready diagnostic assessment was administered. He left two weeks of lesson plans. Ms. Troubady is alternating between her classes and Mr. Gonzalez’s classes and is teaching in both. Mrs. Rios has picked up some geometry classes, and Mrs. Agudelo has added some algebra classes. Mrs. Sellem is handling large class loads. We have two candidates that we have interviewed, but we cannot add them to our staff yet. We must wait until after the district budget conference to fill the open math position; a surplused teacher could be placed here.
Official business: The EESAC voted to approve modifications to the SIP as presented by Mr. Rivers. Mrs. Vinat reintroduced her finance request that she made last meeting with $500 total for ten contest winners per social studies mandate. Mr. Rivers noted that we approved $100 last meeting, so the amount needed today was the remaining $400. The EESAC voted to approve the request for $400.
Principal’s Message: Mrs. Artime shared that we have approximately $5,000 in EESAC funds left over from last year. We generate $5 per student. This year, we have 990 students, and that money has not been placed in our budget yet.
Open Forum: Dr. Garcia said he is waiting for the PTSA meeting to discuss the project for the outdoor classroom with parents. He is gathering estimates for the project. Mateo Delgado said he is generating a QR code for the last meeting and posting it. Mrs. Artime suggested calling it the September EESAC update. Mateo Delgado said he will display the code at Friday’s student council meeting. Mr. Sands announced that tomorrow begins the student United Way campaign. Students will have the opportunity to donate by putting money in one of three jugs, one for each grade, in the attendance office. The winning grade will be allowed to wear the attire of their choice for one week. The Harvest Social is on Oct. 28. Mr. Rivers said locations may have to be adjusted because of social distancing. Mrs. Artime said news can be presented on the morning announcements. Office aids will be producing the announcements and are learning how to do it. Mrs. Artime said clubs are going great. She mentioned that students were sharing at a literary level in Mr. Hudson’s classics book club, discussing Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. She also mentioned Mr. Sands (Student Council), Mrs. Basso (NJHS), Mrs. Vinat (FEA), and Mrs. Noa (cheerleading). Mrs. Artime said the parking lot at the Loquat drop-off area is closed for construction parking. Dr. Garcia said some construction workers are still parking in teacher parking lot. Gates open for student drop-off and pick-up at 8:15 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Mrs. Artime suggested that parents pick up children from Sunset first in the afternoon and then come to Carver. Mr. Rivers said there is a problem with transportation this year and some buses do not show up regularly. We have hourly staff that assist with after-school supervision until buses arrive or parents pick them up at the Lincoln Drive entrance. Dr. Garcia asked about painting the lines for the walking path and repairing the chess board patio. He asked when the walkway will be finished and open. Mr. Rivers said it will probably be more than six months before the chiller arrives and that the scope of the project is two years. Mrs. Artime explained the construction process: painting the entire school, replacing the air conditioning in the old building with one mechanism, trenching to address flooding, replacing the air conditioning in the old cafeteria, renovating the bathrooms by the gym, and rewiring the PA system and fire alarm system. There are limits to what can be done with students present and that has caused delays. We are holding a service day on Oct. 2 and adults are wanted to work; adults must supervise their own children if they bring them.
