Topics Covered

Approval of minutes: Mr. Sands called the meeting to order at 8:15 a.m. The minutes from November 16, 2021, were reviewed and approved.
SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Process (SIP). Mr. Rivers said that the Attendance Boundary Committee (ABC) notification has been released. Carver is not affected because we are a full magnet school, but other nearby schools that may be affected. He passed around a copy of the document. Boundaries are adjusted every year. The Coconut Grove Elementary boundary is being adjusted. The iReady AP2 (midyear) window runs Jan.10 to Feb. 4. Reading and math are not testing at the same time. Some other exams have midyear testing: algebra, biology, civics, and geometry.
Official business: Mrs. Vinat asked if we can change the starting time until later for EESAC meetings. She said it is difficult to make these meetings at the early time. Mr. Rivers said he is flexible but that he worries that it may be difficult to fit all business into the meetings if started later. The EESAC voted to approve an adjustment to the starting time for meetings to 8:15 a.m.
Principal’s Message: Mrs. Artime said our Principal of the Day is Amy Donner. She introduced a new community partner, Mr. Gutierrez. Our final magnet tours are upcoming on Jan. 5 (in person) and Jan. 12 (virtual). Our volleyball teams (JV and varsity girls and JV boys) are competing for district championships. Mrs. Artime said she is hoping for a safe vacation for students and families. Mrs. Rojas of the School Board was here on a visit with members of the Spanish consulate. Construction will be done over the holiday break, and Mr. Springer and Mr. Alexander will be assisting on the media center and Mrs. Vazquez’s room. Mr. Rivers explained that a central AC unit is being installed to connect all rooms. Four new Promethean boards are arriving soon and more may arrive later. New boards do not have projectors.
Open Forum: Mr. Gutierrez said that last year his company made a commitment to donate a percentage of uniform sales to the schools they work with. He said he plans to donate $950 to our school, with $200 going to the PTSA and that his company has channeled more than $185,000 back to education over the past six years. He said he is a product of MDCPS and always happy to support education. Mateo Delgado proposed a tutoring program at Carver for NJHS to get community service hours. He said he would send a Microsoft Form to all students in grades 7 and 8 with subchannels for each tutoring team to tutor on their own schedule. Mrs. Artime said they can tutor in the media center as it will start opening at 8 a.m. in January. Miss Tarac said tutoring is needed in the foreign languages. Mateo Delgado said any subject would be possible. Mrs. Artime said a student is looking to start a safety patrol program and is working with Mrs. Castro.

Adjournment: Mr. Sands adjourned the meeting at 8:40 a.m.
