Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of minutes: Mr. Sands called the meeting to order at 8:15 a.m. The minutes from January 25, 2022, were reviewed and approved.

SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Process (SIP). Mr. Rivers gave an update on iReady diagnostic assessment (AP2). It is optional for students in geometry and algebra, and most algebra students did not test because they are taking the Mid Year Assessment. In math, 78 percent of our students scored at or above grade level compared to 71 percent on AP1 at the beginning of the school year. In reading, 86 percent of our students scored at or above grade level compared to 82 percent on AP1. Mr. Rivers said we are on the right track to achieve proficiency on the FSA. The percentage of students below grade level by one, two, or three grade levels also decreased in both math and reading. Lessons in iReady are designed to work at the current grade level. Mr. Sands said we have finished Civics midyear testing. The staff voted on three waivers for next year, but the vote must be repeated because we were out of compliance. The waivers are for faculty meetings after/before school, an alternative $500 supplement waiver for social media manager, and the block schedule for the 2022-23 school year. All will be voted upon at the next faculty meeting.

Principal’s Message: Mrs. Artime introduced our new school resource officer, Officer Ruiz. He will help with problems with traffic. He said he is working at the Loquat location where traffic has improved. We have more presence at Grand Avenue. He said he is willing to work with any school event. We had a STEAM meeting yesterday and are going for the gold this year for the first time as our teachers are on board and working hard to be ready for the official STEAM visit and we are checking the criteria on the checklist of the rubric. We are having individual data chats with teachers regarding those students who are below grade level; the other challenge is to maintain so that students do not slip a level. We want enrichment for high level students, too. We have begun a morning program for grade 7 language arts whereby Mrs. Fletcher will work with those students from 8-9 three days weekly. In a construction update, Mrs. Artime said over the summer there will be a complete overhaul of the old cafeteria. Currently, we are displacing two classes at a time using the media center and auditorium while work is being done in those classrooms.

Open Forum: Mrs. Vinat said she is thankful for another opportunity to vote on the three waivers. FEA hosted a challenge for Black History Month and about 45 students participated; next week there will be second challenge with QR code. Prize winners will be determined with a lottery. Mrs. Artime said she attended the Coconut Grove Historic Museum event and met many Carver alumni. She said she would like to bring some guest speakers here. Mr. Sands said for 14 years we have had Hall of Fame inductions, and while they have not been held lately due to Covid, there are plans to bring the event back next year. On Feb. 18 there is a Black History Month luncheon for faculty and staff. The Friends of Carver fundraiser is March 5, and teachers are welcome to attend as they are sponsored if they RSVP.
