Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

Approval of minutes: Mr. Sands called the meeting to order at 8:15 a.m. The minutes from April 19, 2022, were reviewed and approved.

SIP Review: The EESAC is the sole body responsible for the approval and implementation of the School Improvement Process (SIP). Mr. Rivers shared the SIP End-Of-Year Review Process. The process requires teachers and the School Leadership Team to provide meaningful input following the review of the SIP implemented during the school year. The Continuous Improvement Reflection Worksheet is used to document the findings after reviewing and providing feedback on the following topics:
 Areas of Strengths and Opportunities for Improvement for each of the areas of focus.
 Predictions about the Instructional Practices for the upcoming school year.
Mr. Rivers highlighted some details from the document including data chats with students after assessments and teachers meeting in departments on Tuesdays and Thursdays to discuss data and best practices. Mr. Rivers also discussed the 2021-2022 End Of Year (EOY) Assurance Checklist. This document is used to ensure that the EESAC has been following the School Board Bylaws and Policy (SBBP) and State Statues for the 2021-2022 school year. The checklist was completed and will be submitted following the meeting.

Principal’s Message: Mrs. Artime said we are wrapping things up. Yesterday we inducted more than 90 students into National Junior Honor Society. We are grateful to Ms. Castillo who has led the testing season. We still have some makeup testing to complete as Covid and flu cases are up, and we have more makeups than usual. The awards assembly is this week. All eighth-graders will participate in international awards day where IS students will receive their international diploma and IS students will receive a medal. Mrs. Artime said it was a thrill to meet Queen Sofia of Spain at a reception. She said she will attend the Coral Gables High School graduation next week. Construction is ongoing and some teachers have been displaced twice. Much construction work is planned for this summer including the cafeteria and restrooms. Summer school is at Ponce Middle for students who would like to get a “Smart Start.” The Principal’s Honor Roll luncheon was last week. Spanish IS students took a field trip to tour a ship. A luncheon for Student Council is on June 7. Mr. Artime thanked all EESAC members for their service this year and encouraged students to stay active in their communities. She said if this is her final EESAC meeting that she has enjoyed her time here.

Open Forum: Mr. Sands said the Carver reunion for graduating high school seniors is at 4 p.m. on June 1 in the cafeteria and teachers are encouraged to attend. Mrs. Vinat said more than 400 students will be rewarded with a free snow cone event on June 1. Mrs. Artime said we are ordering five championship banners to recognize sports teams from this year. Mr. Sands said we have trophies going back more than 50 years and that he would like them displayed in a more visible way. We are having spirit week with various activities next week. Mrs. Vinat said we are working to put a referendum on the ballot to raise teacher pay to address the teacher shortage. The goal is to keep teachers here in the county as other counties in Florida have passed similar referendums. Mrs. Artime said we have three official teacher retirements, and she is actively looking to fill those vacancies. We also are getting a visiting teacher from Spain next year. Dr. Garcia said we uploaded all STEAM documents and received feedback to make corrections as needed. He said it looks like we are well on our way to the Gold STEAM Designation in part because community partners interacted with us more than ever this year. Mr. Calloway represented our school at the Science Teacher of the Year event. Mr. Sands recognized all outgoing and incoming student EESAC representatives. As chairperson, Mr. Sands thanked all members to the EESAC for their work this year. Mrs. Artime thanked Mrs. Toledo for her work with the technology component toward the STEAM Designation.
