Verified EESAC Meeting Minutes

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
On March 14, 2023, Ms. Artime will recognize and reward over 100 students during a luncheon at La Carrerta for their hard work and effort during the 2nd nine-week period (Principal’s Honor Roll Luncheon).
On March 15, 2023, Ms. Harmon and the musical theatre students presented Beauty & Beast.
On March 10, 2023, the school was placed on Lock Down; a jogger was seen running through campus. After the Lock Down, the school’s safety team meet to discuss ways to improve the security of the campus. Some parents had questions regarding the Lock Down. Ms. Artime responded to the parents’ concerns. She also thanked the staff and students for how they complied with the Lock Down. We are required to perform emergency drills throughout the school year; students and staff are well-versed on how to respond during a crisis. Ms. Artime reiterated that the safety of our staff and students remain paramount. Some of the details that parents wanted could not be provided because it would compromise the school’s safety and how we prepare and respond to situations.

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PROCESS (SIP)
The School Climate Surveys are an integral part of the District's efforts to promote school improvement and educational accountability. The purpose of these surveys is to gather information regarding what these groups think about the school and their perceptions concerning how the school can be improved. The 2022-2023 administration began in March 2023 for all schools; responses are due by May 05, 2023. As in the past, we will facilitate the completion of the student surveys during their Social Studies class. Parents were sent a link via SchoolMessenger to complete the survey. Information from the surveys will assist us in School Improvement Process for the upcoming school year.

CARVER HALL OF FAME
Over 100 alumni participated in the Carver Hall of Fame Induction to honor Ms. Leona Cooper Baker (this year’s inductee). The presentation started at 2pm in the auditorium. During the presentation, Ms. Artime reminded the alumni of their impact on Carver and the surrounding community. She extended an open invitation to them to get involved in “their” school and continue to be a beacon for our community. In turn, members of the alumni association extended an invitation to the school to join them during their alumni meetings. Ms. Baker received a plaque; a duplicate will be hung in the middle learning center (new building) in an area designated for our Hall of Fame recipients.

SPIKE-IT-UP (Volleyball Event)
On March 17th, the Spike-It Up event for 6th graders will occur. We are expected about 300 students to attend this event; 6th grade is our largest class. The Student Council will assist Mr. Sands – recording names and selling tickets – with this event. Students will only be allowed to attend one session; first block or last block. The athletic club members will act as referees, score keepers. Snacks provided by the PTSA will be sold.

UTD UPDATES (Ms. Vinat and Ms. Lindo)
Ms. Vinat and the PTSA organized several activities to highlight and celebrate Black History Month. The activities included a scavenger hunt, Kahoot games, and a poster contest. Winners of the contests will be rewarded. Activities for Women’s History, which is recognized during the month of March, will also be taking place.
Ms. Vinat provided a synopsis of several legislative bills that will directly impact public education and teacher unions. The United Teachers of Dade (UTD) will be sending members of their cabinet to schools to provide updates to recent legislative bills and provide teachers with ways on how they can get involved and make a difference. She suggested that parents get involved and educate themselves regarding these and other bills / legislative actions and submit their concerns to elected officials. It was suggested that arrangements be made so that a larger group of parents are informed of these bills; perhaps during a PTSA meeting or a Zoom meeting.

End-Of-Course (EOC) exams, Mid- Year Assessments, and Advanced Placement (AP) exams
Mid-Year assessments have already been administered. The Algebra 1 mid-year exam scores were low. However, Carver’s scores were better than the District’s average scores. Extended learning opportunities will be available to students who did not perform well on the mid-year assessment(s). The EOCs will begin in May.
FYI – Mrs. Vinat will be hosting boot camps on Mondays-Thursdays. Two Civics workshops occurred near the beginning of the year to inform the parents about the Civics EOC. Mrs. Vazquez will be providing tutoring and test-prep for Science (grade 8 and Biology) via Zoom. Math tutoring began a while ago and is on-going. The EOC is important as it makes up 30% of the final grade. Teachers of the Advanced Placement courses will be providing their students with support for their exams. NOTE – Carver has a history of performing well, 90% or higher passing rate, on the AP exams. Students that pass AP exams are awarded college credit by participating colleges.

FOOTBALL UNIFORMS
Ms. Daniels in working with the PTSA and a uniform company to secure uniforms for the boys' football team.

INJURIES
Ms. Artime expressed a concern regarding students that are injured during physical education. She asked that the Physical Education teachers continue to promote good health habits (i.e. staying hydrated) and safety measures with their classes.

SPRING SOCIAL
The Spring Social that was to be held during February was cancelled. However, the team leaders are planning activities/events for their grade level that will take place April 14.

FRIENDS OF CARVER
Friends of Carver will be having a meeting soon, so general knowledge about the event is highly recommended.

EARTH DAY
The school will be having a community service opportunity; an Earth Day School Cleanup day. Mrs. Sellem and Mrs. Mustelier will combine their clubs, Green Club and Kids4Ocean, to host events during school for Earth Day.
